
A crash involved several riders while the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia was about seventy kilometers from the finish line: the light rain that hit Irpinia transformed the roads into a genuine soap slide. Among the athletes involved was Jai Hindley. The Australian from Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe was one of the first to lose control of his bike, falling to the ground and promptly assisted. The Australian appeared very shaken, got up but was then loaded into the ambulance: he did not seem to have obvious fractures or problems, probably the concussion protocol was activated for him.
Among the riders forced to withdraw was Juri Hollmann from Alpecin Deceuninck, who might have fractured his pelvis, but many riders were left stranded. Czech rider Jozef Cerny, who had been treated in the ambulance, restarted with shorts and socks completely red from blood. Evident medical treatments were also given to Fortunato and Busatto.
Currently, the race has been neutralized by decision of the race management and jury panel. Athletes are proceeding at a controlled pace behind the organization's vehicles.
UPDATE 4:03 PM: the race is stopped on a straight section, the jury's decision is to restart the race at km 66, reforming the caravan as it was at the moment of the stop, therefore with Paleni and Van der Hoorn in the breakaway.
Discussions are happening roadside, organizers and jury are evaluating what to do. The possibility of neutralizing the entire stage and only holding the final sprint is taking shape.

UPDATE 4:08 PM: final decision, race neutralized, only the final sprint will be held. Gaps canceled, no time will be taken, no bonus points or finish line points will be awarded. Restart with the previous race situation, therefore with Paleni and van der Hoorn in the breakaway with a 50" advantage. The race officially restarted at 4:10 PM, 58 km from the conclusion.
