On the eve of the 119th Il Lombardia presented by Crédit Agricole, the official starters have been announced who will compete tomorrow for the last Monument Classic of the season. The route measures 241 km from Como to Bergamo, with over 4,400 meters of elevation gain and climbs that have written the history of world cycling: Madonna del Ghisallo, Roncola, Berbenno, Passo della Crocetta, Zambla Alta and Passo di Ganda, before the grand finale with the Colle Aperto climb,
After being crowned world champion for the second time and, for the first time, European champion, Tadej Pogačar is presenting himself for the fifth time at the start of Il Lombardia presented by Crédit Agricole, where he boasts an unmatched record: the Slovenian has won all four editions he has participated in. A potential fifth victory would allow him to equal Fausto Coppi as the most successful rider in the Classic of the Falling Leaves.
The main challenger to the Slovenian will be Remco Evenepoel, coming off second places at the World Championship and European Championship, as well as the same placement in the 2024 edition. The Belgian, already winner of eight races in 2025, appears to be Pogačar's most credible rival.
Among the big names at the start are also Primož Roglič, third in 2023, and Ben Healy, bronze medalist at the Kigali World Championship. Great anticipation for the debuts of Thomas Pidcock, who will close a satisfying season at Il Lombardia, and Isaac Del Toro, who reached fifteen seasonal victories at Thursday's GranPiemonte, who will join Pogačar.
The list of outsiders is also long and of the highest level, including Egan Bernal, Paul Seixas, Richard Carapaz, Julian Alaphilippe, Bauke Mollema, Mattias Skjelmose, Jai Hindley, Oscar Onley, Romain Grégoire and, among the Italians, Andrea Bagioli, Christian Scaroni and Giulio Pellizzari.
The list of participants can be found in the attached PDF
THE ROUTE OF IL LOMBARDIA PRESENTED BY CRÉDIT AGRICOLE
Departure from Como towards Cantù. The Ghisallo is climbed as the first difficulty, but from the Asso side to descend to Bellagio and reach Lecco along the shores of Lake Como. Entering the province of Bergamo, the series of difficulties leading to the finish begins, characterized by a continuous succession of climbs and descents with almost no flat sections between them. First climbed is Roncola (Valpiana Pass, gradients up to 17%). Followed by the climbs of Berbenno, Dossena, Zambla Alta and Passo di Ganda, which bring the total elevation gain above 4,400 m. From Ganda, arrive at Selvino where the classic long descent with 19 hairpin turns begins. There are then 9 km of approach to the city (the only flat section of the entire finale) and the classic passage through Città Alta to the finish.
Final kilometers through Bergamo Alta, climbing to Porta Garibaldi and then (with 200 m of cobblestones) to Largo Colle Aperto. In the first part, the gradients are always above 10% (max 12%). The descent has a wide carriageway on a smooth surface. At 1,800 m from the finish, a sharp turn with a brief narrow section to pass through Porta Sant'Agostino. After the last kilometer, a wide left curve to enter the straight leading to the finish. Final straight of 800 m, descending in the first part and then flat.
