The cycling Sunday on the Breton roads of Plouay continues and, after Giovanni Lonardi's victory in the Grand Prix de Plouay, comes the success of Arnaud De Lie (Lotto) who in the sprint - at the conclusion of 261 kilometers of racing - chose the right moment to anticipate the French Emilien Jeannière (Team TotalEnergies) and Olav Kooij (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). The Dutchman, who started his sprint very early, ended up on the third step of the podium.
THE RACE - The first kilometers of today's long race brought to the fore the Spaniards Óscar Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers), Andoni López de Abetxuko (Euskaltel – Euskadi), and Iker Mintegi (Euskaltel – Euskadi), the British Lewis Askey (Groupama – FDJ) and the Swiss Silvan Dillier (Alpecin – Deceuninck) who attacked about twenty kilometers after the start, going by common agreement on the continuous ups and downs of the course.
The action of the five concluded when ninety-five kilometers remained to the finish line and shortly after it was the Mexican Del Toro. The young UAE Team Emirates rider's attack selected the group, causing some athletes to lose wheels.
The subsequent attack was proposed by Asgreen: the Danish rider from EF Education – EasyPost went to the front alone, forcing opponents, and particularly Lotto athletes, to work to chase. After reaching a maximum advantage of 1'45", the action of the Ronde van Vlaanderen winner concluded 39 kilometers from the finish line, just before the Côte de Marta.
On the climb, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates – XRG), Simone Velasco (XDS Astana Team), Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull - BORA – hansgrohe), Quinten Hermans (Alpecin – Deceuninck), Krists Neilands (Israel - Premier Tech), Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla), Ewen Costiou (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) and Alexandre Delettre (Team TotalEnergies) pulled ahead; these men were caught by the best group at the entrance of the final circuit.
At that point, the Breton Valentin Madouas (Groupama – FDJ), Filippo Zana (Team Jayco AlUla) and Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) started repeated attacks. The transalpine, winner of the race in 2023, passed first at the sound of the last lap bell with a 12" advantage over the immediate chasers.
8 kilometers from the finish line, McNulty, Van Gils and Barré rejoined Madouas, while the peloton was led by Arkea B&B Hotels and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale. On the Côte du Lezot, the last difficulty of the day, Barré (Intermarché – Wanty) tried to surprise his adventure companions but failed, seeing them return to his wheel. At the red triangle, the group came back together, canceling any attack attempt.
For a moment Kooij launched his sprint, but De Lie, more cunning, exploited his work and overtook him, conquering the thirtieth victory of his young career.
DE LIE'S FIRST WORDS AND THE "CRAZY END OF THE SEASON": This is one of my favorite races and I'm really very happy to have won. Organizing a sprint here in Plouay is not simple, but today everything went perfectly. I must thank my teammates for the help they gave me today. Today I was covered and I only moved to follow the attacks on the Cotes, certainly in the last kilometers the four escapees worried me a bit, but, I repeat, our preparation and timing was really excellent: I followed Kooij, I was on his wheel and then... that's it. I'm happy, after the Renewi Tour I won here, it's a crazy end of the season for me.
