Winning the Tour de France Femmes was her declared goal, and Pauline Ferrand Prévot succeeded on her first attempt after returning to road cycling with the Visma Lease a Bike jersey. The coronation of the queen in yellow just occurred at the end of the Praz-sur-Arly / Châtel Les Portes du Soleil, the ninth stage of the race that the French rider won solo, leaving Demi Vollering (FDJ - SUEZ) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto) behind. The Dutch rider, winner of the 2023 Tour, and the Polish rider, winner of the previous edition, finish on the stage podium and in the same order in the general classification.
THE STAGE - The last stage of the Tour de France was anything but a parade. From the first kilometers, there were many attacks, especially by SD Worx Protime riders, and the team's captain Anna Van der Breggen decided to go solo at the thirtieth kilometer, quickly gaining a good margin of advantage.
The two-time world champion conquered the GPM of Côte d'Arâches-la-Frasse and the intermediate sprint at Morillon, starting the subsequent climb to Col de Joux Plane with 1'35" ahead of the yellow jersey group.
The slopes of the Hors Categorie peak made a selection, and behind Van der Breggen remained: Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance - Soudal Team), Demi Vollering (FDJ – SUEZ), Juliette Labous (FDJ – SUEZ), Dominika Włodarczyk (UAE Team ADQ) and Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl – Trek). At the Joux Plane summit, Van der Breggen was leading with 47" over the immediate chase group led by Demi Vollering. Cédrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly), who had been involved in a crash at the start of the climb, was further behind.
The race situation changed on the Col du Corbier climb: the chase group with Ferrand-Prévot, Vollering, Labous, Fisher-Black (but without Gigante, who was dropped on the descent) caught Van der Breggen, who quickly lost the wheels, weighed down by the fatigue of many kilometers at the front.
With 29 kilometers to go, on the last GPM of the Tour de France Femmes, Vollering, Ferrand-Prévot, and Niewiadoma passed in that order with Gigante 2'13" behind. At 7 kilometers, after great work by Juliette Labous, Demi Vollering attacked but didn't worry her rivals. And then... from the back of the group, in a counterattack, yellow jersey Pauline Ferrand-Prévot went. Pushing hard on the pedals, the French rider immediately took a fifteen-second advantage that became twenty at the finish.
