Jonas Vingegaard never thought of taking advantage of Tadej Pogacar's fall and agreed with the rest of the group that decided to wait for the Slovenian. The world champion fell five kilometers from the finish line, but despite the stress from the incident, he immediately had the presence of mind and clarity to get back up and continue racing.
The group with the general classification riders had no doubts, and Remco Evenepoel was the first to ask to wait, immediately turning around and shouting to the entire group: "Stop, stop, stop". Jonas Vingegaard, who made a few comments in the bus area, said he had no doubts and, like everyone else, waited for the world champion to rejoin the race.
"He was pedaling right next to me, so I saw the fall," Vingegaard said referring to Pogacar's incident. "I hope first of all that he is okay. And so we all waited for him, as I believe is the right thing to do."
Vingegaard explained that waiting was a normal gesture and should not be seen as something extraordinary, but as a due act towards the world champion and a rider competing for the general classification.
"We gave Pogacar the opportunity to get back, because this is sportsmanship. When something like this happens, it's pure bad luck. He didn't exaggerate in the turn or anything like that. It was just two wheels that crossed. So I think this was the right way to proceed."
The yellow race will resume today with the twelfth stage, which will see the general classification riders engaged, with the finish at Hautacam. Vingegaard did not want to talk about strategy or what Pogacar will do in the race and whether he will have problems following today's fall.
"It will be a difficult day, just like every stage of the Tour, and we will do our best".
