Albania is not only behind us, but very far away, much more distant than Australia, which could be approaching rapidly. The fifteenth chapter of a foreign start has gone into the archives and is now history, but a start from Australia would be at least an exceptional event, comparable to the one hypothesized, thought of, and nearly realized a few years ago when New York was in the mix.
The idea circulated in one of the homelands of cycling: Belgium. In recent hours, a simple rumor has become a narrative: the 2027 Giro d'Italia could start from the continent of kangaroos. This would be at least intriguing, but also very complex organizationally. From a logistical point of view, things would obviously be very complicated, but the men of RCS Sport & Events do not rule out the idea relaunched by Michael Tomalaris, an Australian journalist: "There are ongoing discussions to bring the first three stages of the 2027 Giro to Australia - he wrote on Instagram and then reiterated on Sporza, the Belgian TV -. I know that RCS is actually evaluating options to bring the Giro to Australia. I realize it might seem impossible to many, but it's something that is seriously being considered. There are at least three Australian cities evaluating this project".
A suggestive but impractical idea? Absolutely not. Mauro Vegni, director of the Giro, responded to those asking for clarification: "From a practical and logistical point of view, obviously, it is a difficult thing - explained the Giro director -. But we don't say no to anyone a priori. Everything is possible, but we need to study the actual interest and very carefully consider what the perspective of the International Cycling Union might be, especially since we still don't know how the calendar might be reformed", Vegni added: "We are available for dialogue with anyone, although then we have to see if a discussion about a Grand Start can actually begin".
