TOUR, THE NUMBERS OF THE NINETEENTH STAGE. POGACAR COLLECTS MYTHICAL MILESTONES AND EQUALS COPPI

TOUR DE FRANCE | 25/07/2026 | 08:00

Numbers, curiosities and statistics help us to re-read and deepen what we experienced in yesterday's stage. Follow us:

1: THE RAINBOW ALPE
Winner at L'Alpe d'Huez after climbing the 13.8 kilometers of ascent at an average speed of 23.4 km/h, Tadej Pogacar has become the first reigning world champion to win at the Isère location in thirty-two arrivals. At the beginning of this edition, he was already the first to wear the rainbow jersey while topping the Col du Tourmalet. The Slovenian, who also won his 26th stage at the Tour de France in his career, is only the second with the yellow jersey to raise his arms at the top of this mythical climb, eight years after British rider Geraint Thomas, the overall final winner.

12: MASTER OF THE PEAKS
By adding his name to the prestigious list of L'Alpe d'Huez winners, Tadej Pogacar has collected a twelfth summit of the Tour to his list of successes. The two-time world champion has also raised his arms for the sixteenth time in his career at the top of a major climb of the Grande Boucle. After opening this list at Col du Grand Colombier in 2020, the Slovenian then conquered the slopes of Planche des Belles Filles (2020 and 2022), Col du Portet and Luz-Ardiden in 2021, Peyragudes (2022 and 2025), Cauterets-Cambasque (2023), Pla d'Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000 and Col de la Couillole in 2024 and finally this year Les Angles and Gavarnie-Gèdre. All these successes are synonymous with an absolute record in this category, with the exception of pure climbers. His closest pursuer is Belgian Lucien Van Impe, who achieved 8 victories on the slopes of Les Ménuires, Orcières-Merlette, Puy-de-Dôme, Pyrenees 2000, as well as twice at Avoriaz and Pla d'Adet.

2: POGACAR COPIES FAUSTO
Tadej Pogacar joins the "Campionissimo". By winning at L'Alpe d'Huez, the Slovenian becomes the second rider to top the Col du Tourmalet and climb to the 21st hairpin bend in the same edition. Before him, only Fausto Coppi, two-time Tour winner (1949 and 1952), had managed to achieve such a feat in the year of his second title.

4: VICTORIES IN ABUNDANCE
Dominant in the mountains from the start of this Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar won a stage for the fifth time this year. And although he has not yet matched his 2024 record (six victories), the Slovenian has become the fourth rider to win at least five times in the last fifty years in two editions of the Grande Boucle. Alongside Pogacar are Belgian Freddy Maertens (8 victories in 1976 and 5 in 1981), Frenchman Bernard Hinault (7 victories in 1979 and 5 in 1981), and British rider Mark Cavendish, who even repeated this feat for three consecutive Tours (6 victories in 2009, 5 in 2010 and 2011).

80: SLOVENIA CELEBRATES ITS ANNIVERSARY WITH THE YELLOW JERSEY
By consolidating his first place in the general classification on the slopes of L'Alpe d'Huez, Tadej Pogacar gives Slovenia its 80th yellow jersey. The two-time world champion alone has 69 jerseys since taking the lead in 2020, with the other eleven carried by Primoz Roglic in the same year (second at the final finish).

19: SEIXAS REWRITES THE HISTORY OF YOUTH
At 19 years and 10 months old, Paul Seixas becomes the first cyclist under 20 years of age to climb L'Alpe d'Huez in Tour de France history, breaking the precocity record of Jean Le Guilly. The latter had climbed all 21 hairpin bends (and finished 17th) when he was introduced to the Tour in 1952, at the age of 20 years, 5 months and 17 days. And thanks to his performance of the day (9th), Seixas logically became the youngest rider to enter the top 10 of a stage ending at the ski resort in Isère. Dethroning Jan Nolten, eighth in 1952 at the age of 22 years, 5 months and 14 days.

3: FRANCE STILL WITHOUT SUCCESS
Present in the breakaway of the day, Lenny Martinez finished second at the top of L'Alpe d'Huez, signing not only his first podium at the Tour, but also France's best result in this edition. The climber thus did better than Paul Seixas, third at Le Lioran and Le Markstein. Above all, it is the third time in history that the host country of the competition has no success at the end of the 19th stage. And the statistics are not favorable to France regarding a hypothetical victory in Paris, because the country has never won its first bouquet during the 20th and 21st stages. So far, only two Tours, in 1926 and 1999, have ended without a French victory.

6: CARAPAZ FALLS BACK
Like the day before, Richard Carapaz found himself in the breakaway for 124 kilometers heading to L'Alpe d'Huez, a distance he covered at an average speed of 38.8 km/h. Fighting for the polka dot jersey – of which he is the new owner – and in the race for stage victory (3rd), the Ecuadorian won the combativity award for the fourth time this year. A performance that allows the Ecuadorian climber to equal Giovanni Battaglin, holder of the record for combativity awards obtained in a single edition in the last half century. That was in 1979. Carapaz now has a three-point advantage over his teammate Ben Healy, his closest pursuer among the riders entered this year.
