It has not been a fortunate Giro so far for Jonathan Milan, who has never managed to execute a perfect sprint. Today, however, the Friuli rider has nothing to reproach himself for, but he is making his voice heard to lodge a complaint.
"It seems absurd to me to have a finish like this, extremely dangerous. In fact, there was a crash: I don't understand why you have to go looking for stage finishes like this one, I find it simply absurd. It would have been dangerous even when dry, let alone when the first drops of rain started falling. The crash? I stayed on my feet but I almost took down Dylan Groenewegen who got hurt".
Under fire from Milan is the U-shaped corner positioned 400 meters from the finish, which then led onto the final straight that brought riders to Piazza del Plebiscito. A cobblestone corner that in the rain turned into a trap: the mistake by Emar Reinders, Groenewegen's lead-out man, effectively eliminated any chance of victory for all the riders except Ballerini and Stuyven, who in turn were two lead-out men who found themselves alone to fight for the stage.
