A new velodrome, the first with an aluminum track, is being inaugurated today in Tucson, Arizona. The 250-meter track, with curve inclinations of 42 degrees, includes an access tunnel, Musco lighting, restrooms, auxiliary buildings, and stands: the facility was designed by Peter Junek, who sees this as his 37th velodrome in 50 years of work in the sector. The design offers a welcoming environment for spectators, and the internal space allows the facility to serve as a stadium for other activities, such as concerts and various events.
Aluminum was chosen as the velodrome surface because it perfectly adapts to Tucson's climate: it allows the velodrome to withstand high summer temperatures and enables year-round use.
The construction of the Tucson Velodrome was funded exclusively by a generous private foundation: thanks to this significant donation, Tucson now boasts a world-class Velodrome.
The velodrome, which will be used by professional athletes but also open to the public, is located within a park dedicated to sports and motorsport activities, the Musselman Honda Park.
The rates applied to Tucson Velodrome users - management reports - are used to cover the facility's operating and maintenance costs. The Tucson Velodrome is committed to promoting track cycling for everyone: cycling in a safe place is fundamental for physical health and community well-being. Training courses and racing programs are already scheduled, which will involve a wide range of athletes and enthusiasts in the southwest of the country.
