The first African world championship is giving us many curious stories, today it has gifted us with the first truly significant result from a young promising talent who has achieved a historic top ten finish.
Kahsay Tsige Kiros made history by finishing in the top ten in the junior world championship won by Spanish rider Paula Ostiz Taco ahead of Italian Chanta Pegolo. The Eritrean representative, not content with a 22nd place at the Tour de l'Avenir, lived her moment of glory - far from ephemeral - at the world championship in Kigali. Thus, at the end of the race, the Ethiopian box transformed into a kind of "torcida", with national flags of the country where Kiros was born 18 years ago, on April 10, 2007, suddenly appearing.
We had spoken about her with Tgsabu Grmay, the beacon of the entire cycling movement, and the former World Tour professional had spoken with full appreciation about the girl who, among other things, is also originally from the Tigray Region, bordering Eritrea, just like the former Jayco Alula representative. "She emerged last March at the Tour of Tigray, winning the stage race organized by my Amani team. I think she has done something truly extraordinary today," explains Grmay, always ready to support women's cycling.
Kiros also rose to prominence through a reel posted during the Tour de France days, when the World Cycling Center girl was participating in a stage in Brittany. A floral tribute arrived from a certain Tadej Pogacar, and little Tsige burst into tears. Her resistance and resilience on the Côte de Kimihurura was incredible, almost as if an entire continent was pushing her forward.
