WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MASTERPIECE! Lorenzo Mark Finn conquers the world jersey in the Under 23 category, his second consecutive title after last year's Junior World Championship in Zurich. The 18-year-old Ligurian rider broke away solo with six kilometers to go and crossed the finish line with his arms raised, 31" ahead of Swiss rider Jan Huber, who finished second. Austrian Marco Schrettl completed the podium, finishing 1'13" behind the new World Champion. Finn, who was already fourth in the time trial, delivered an outstanding performance, confirming all the potential that has been discussed about him so far and bringing Italy its second medal of the Rwanda expedition after Federica Venturelli's bronze in the time trial.
An initial attack to select the race, a breakaway with a six-rider group, then reduced to four, then a duo with Swiss Huber desperately clinging to Finn's wheel until the last pass on the Kigali Golf climb, where the Ligurian rider made his decisive move, arriving alone, just like he did last year in Zurich.
THE RACE. In the first kilometers, four brave riders launched the attack: Michał Pomorski (Poland), Mohammed Alaleeli (UAE), Danylo Kozoriz (Ukraine) and Ramazan Yilmaz (Turkey). After just 23 kilometers of racing, thanks to the pace set by the Belgian riders, the group caught Kozoriz and returned to a compact peloton.
With 3 laps to go, six riders broke away: Finn (Italy), Alvarez (Spain), Gajdulewicz (Poland), Schrettl (Austria), Huber (Switzerland). The Ligurian increased the pace again with 32 kilometers to go on the Côte de Kimihurura.
