David Gaudu was already thinking about the red leader's jersey this morning and today, at the end of the fourth stage finishing in Voiron, he managed to become the leader of the general classification.
"Of course, this morning it was a constant thought in my head," Gaudu said after the awards ceremony. "I didn't know if I could fight for a position in the sprint, because it's very, very dangerous, but after talking with the team, I had the feeling I could go strong towards the finish and take a good position."
The victory went to British rider Turner from Ineos Grenadiers, but the French rider from Groupama FDJ, who crossed the finish line ahead of Vingegaard, managed to take the red jersey from the Danish rider. "I went full speed towards the finish line and then, well, it's incredible what happened, and wearing this jersey now is fantastic. This jersey is not just for me but for the entire team."
Gaudu, who won yesterday's stage in Ceres and had already reached Vingegaard in the general classification, today managed to wear the leader's jersey thanks to intermediate sprint bonuses, while maintaining the same time as Vingegaard. "We tried to take the intermediate sprint bonuses and the team did an excellent job for this. We were at the front and I simply followed the wheel, but I couldn't win. Then I spoke on the radio with the team car and they told me we could still make it, and the team in the last 30 km really gave their all."
The Frenchman has already won three stages in the Spanish race, two in 2020 and one this year, but this is the first time he's worn the leader's jersey. Now his Groupama-FDJ will try to maintain the lead in the general classification, but it won't be easy because tomorrow's team time trial in Figueres will favor teams like Visma-Lease a Bike, Ineos-Grenadiers, and UAE Emirates. "In our team we have riders like Stephan Kung and Rémi Cavagna and therefore we have a strong team for the time trial. We'll push to the maximum and try to do the best possible time trial. Then we'll see what happens after the finish line. We'll give everything and then see if we've managed to keep this jersey."
