At the end of the Dauphiné, Jonas Vingegaard returns home with a silver medal around his neck. This was not the result he wanted, but at the moment, the Danish champion feels satisfied.
"A silver medal is not something to be particularly happy about, but I think I can still be proud of a second place in this race" - Vingegaard told Danish television Feltet - "Of course, I hoped to win, but second place is also fine. Then I hope to do better at the Tour de France".
In this Dauphiné, Vingegaard achieved 4 second places, three behind Pogacar and one in the time trial behind Remco Evenepoel.
"I improved more and more in this race. It didn't go very well in the first mountain finish, but in the last two days it got better and better. This boosts morale and when I'm at the Tour de France, I will fight until the end".
In the last stage, the Dane did not want to attack Pogacar and managed not to lose additional time. Vingegaard and Pogacar arrived together at the Plateau du Mont-Cens finish line, but there was no sprint between them.
"He's a good guy" - said the Dane referring to Pogacar - "He deserved the victory. It was an encouraging week. I know I'm not yet at my best form in this Dauphiné, but I can still improve for the Tour. I usually use the Dauphiné as training for the Tour, and this year I adopted the same approach. That said, I still want to race for victory, and the fact that I'm not at the top right now doesn't mean I can't win".
In the next few days, Visma-Lease a Bike, as every year before the Tour de France, will move to Tignes, where they will prepare the best strategy to conquer the Grand Boucle. "Now is the time to train in Tignes for the Tour, and I'm sure I'll gain a lot from this period and maybe even lose a kilo".
