LAST YEAR'S RACE
Slovenian Jacob Omrzel sprinted to victory over Lorenzo Finn in the 36th Dorigo Trophy. The Slovenian national champion Jakob Omrzel (Team Adria Mobil) lived up to expectations, beating Genoese Lorenzo Mark Finn (Team Grenke - Auto Eder under-19 development team of Bora Hansgrohe), who would later become world champion, and winning the 36th edition of the Solighetto International Junior Race.
The race, organized by S.C. Solighetto 1919 under president Raffaele Mazzucco, featured the best of the international junior cycling scene, with 35 teams including 13 foreign squads.
The race maintained a high pace from the start, with the first 14.6 km circuit through Solighetto and Refrontolo repeated three times, followed by a larger 30.3 km loop also repeated three times, including climbs of Ca' del Poggio and Colvendrame.
After some early breakaway attempts were quickly neutralized, seven riders eventually broke away after the first climb at Ca' del Poggio: Danish rider Andersen, Italian Finn (Grenke Auto Eder), Slovenian Valjavec Erazem (Autozai Contri), Slovenian national champion Jakob Omrzel (Adria Mobil), Enea Sambinello, Ivan Toselli (Vangi), and David Zanutta (Team Tiepolo Udine).
The seven riders worked together, gaining up to half a minute on the immediate chasers. During the fifth lap, on the second climb of Ca' del Poggio, four riders pushed ahead: Finn, Andersen, Valjavec, and Omrzel.
At the bell, they had a 32" lead over Sambinello, Toselli, and Zanutta, while the main group was already four minutes behind.
Finn won the King of the Mountains points at Ca' del Poggio and Colvendrame in the final lap, and his attacks helped the four leaders increase their advantage to 2 minutes and 10 seconds in the last circuit.
Andersen and Valjavec dropped back, leaving Finn and Omrzel to sprint to the finish. In a tight sprint, the Slovenian champion, who had previously won the Junior Paris-Roubaix and Coppa Montes, took the victory.
