Four hundred and forty-four kilometers by bicycle. From Monte Fumaiolo to the sea at Fiumicino. Along the Tiber. This is the Regina Ciclarum, the mother of all bike paths. And it's still a dream. But something has been done. And that something is beautiful.
The North Tiber bike path was rediscovered (each time it's like the first time, or almost) during the "At the End of the City - Explorations" event, a series conceived by Fernanda Pessolano for Ti con Zero as part of a festival that the Rome City Council designed to enhance the suburbs, like a kind of centrifugal cultural force. This time, the focus was on Municipality XV, stretching from Ponte Milvio to Cesano, thanks to a bike ride organized by the VediRomaInBici association, meeting at Largo Corrado Ricci, then the bike path from Ponte Milvio to Castel Giubileo, 11 kilometers crossing Tor di Quinto Park, the Acquacetosa sports centers, the treatment plant area, a green route frequented by cyclists and runners, walkers and pilgrims, an extraordinary entrance (or exit) route from the capital. Resurfaced, flat, and paved, with drinking water fountains, free and potable, signs dedicated to female partisans. And the return route, with a reversed perspective, doesn't even seem like the same path. And just the image of the Dome, which dominates and then towers, makes the trip worthwhile.
Exploring Rome by bicycle: it's possible. As claimed by Franck Kuntz, author of "Pedala Roma" (Ediciclo, which we've also written about here: https://www.tuttobiciweb.it/article/2024/12/05/1733352852/pedala-roma-libro-kuntz). Declared by those from VediRomaInBici (www.vediromainbici.it), who since 2009, every weekend, gather their members to explore the city through literary or cinematic, historical or geographical routes, sometimes relying on commemorations and anniversaries, other times on suggestions or coincidences (upcoming events range from noble Roman families to Rome's aviators and the homes of hierarchs...). Repeated by Piero Tucci, who also led the Tiber excursion, and his mantra is "Rome, a lifetime is not enough". On this occasion, they touched on the history of Ponte Milvio, the peculiarity of the Brasini Palace, the birth of Tor di Quinto Park, with curiosities and anecdotes (Enrico Berlinguer used to shop here, Marisa Laurito lived here, Lazio trained here...) of daily life.
Exploring Rome by bike: not only is it possible, but it must be done.
