Exactly one week before the start of the Giro d'Italia from Albania, the 23 teams participating in the Corsa Rosa have officially announced their riders. Many stars are expected in an edition that will see five former Giro d'Italia winners participating: Nairo Quintana (2014), Richard Carapaz (2019), Egan Bernal (2021), Jai Hindley (2022), and Primož Roglič (2023).
Among these, the Slovenian is the main favorite for the overall victory. Roglič, captain of an ambitious Red Bull - Bora - Hansgrohe team thanks to the presence of Hindley and Daniel Felipe Martinez, who was second in 2024, will share the favorites' spotlight with Juan Ayuso, who has had an excellent start to the season, highlighted by five victories including Tirreno-Adriatico. The Spaniard, also a great favorite for the White Jersey, will be accompanied by another highly anticipated debutant, Isaac Del Toro, and Adam Yates, making his second participation after finishing 9th in 2017.
MOUNTAIN PROTAGONISTS
Among the names to watch for high overall positions are Mikel Landa (twice on the podium in 2015 and 2022), Simon Yates (third in 2021), Antonio Tiberi (White Jersey in 2024 but recently hindered by some physical issues at Tour of the Alps), Pello Bilbao (twice in the top 5), Derek Gee (O Gran Camiño winner), Romain Bardet (in his last Giro participation), and David Gaudu, making his Corsa Rosa debut. More in the background, but still capable of making an impact on the big climbs: Giulio Ciccone, Thymen Arensman, Max Storer, Einer Rubio, Damiano Caruso, Max Poole, Davide Piganzoli, Lorenzo Fortunato, Wouter Poels, Georg Steinhauser, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Koen Bouwman and Filippo Zana.
STAGE HUNTERS, SPRINTERS, AND TIME TRIAL SPECIALISTS
The list of riders hunting for stage victories, both on mixed and flat routes, is long and full of big names. The Corsa Rosa will see the debut of three major one-day race protagonists: Wout Van Aert, Thomas Pidcock and Marc Hirschi. Third participation for Mads Pedersen, winner in Naples in 2023 and one of the most anticipated after a spring full of results. Among the stage hunters in hilly stages stand out Diego Ulissi, Quinten Hermans, Taco Van der Hoorn, Jakob Fuglsang, Dorian Godon, Davide Formolo, Marco Frigo, Marco Brenner and Martin Marcellusi.
In Naples, Olav Kooij won his first Giro stage, already with three seasonal victories and a reference point among sprinters. His main rivals will be Kaden Groves, Paul Magnier, Matteo Moschetti and the returning Sam Bennett, very prolific in this early 2025. In the second row, but still competitive, are Rick Pluimers, Casper Van Uden, Filippo Fiorelli, Luke Lamperti, Giovanni Lonardi, Enrico Zanoncello and Orluis Aular.
The two time trials will be ideal terrain for time trial specialists. Expected at the start are the last two European champions of the discipline, Edoardo Affini and Joshua Tarling, along with Mattia Cattaneo, Brandon Mc Nulty, Jay Vine and Daan Hoole.
