The result of the European Cyclocross Championship for elite women held yesterday in Zeddam continues to spark debate. At the center of the controversy is the decision made by the Commissaires' Panel: having identified an irregularity in the sprint of Marie Schreiber, first across the line, the Judges downgraded the Luxembourg rider and thus awarded the continental title to Dutch rider Lucinda Brand.
Several hours after the podium ceremony, which Schreiber boycotted in protest, the Luxembourg Cycling Federation announced it had filed an official appeal with the Union Européenne de Cyclisme.
In a statement published on the Luxembourg federation's social media profiles, it reads: "The FSCL has officially filed an appeal with the UEC regarding the jury's decision. The FSCL requests that the race classification be drawn up based on the order in which riders crossed the finish line".
In addition to the cycling federation, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg also chose to intervene who, as reported by the website Virgule, sent a message to Schreiber: "Beyond the reactions to the outcome of this competition, what you have achieved is admirable and makes an entire country proud. I am certain that this wave of support and encouragement will continue to accompany you in the pursuit of your sporting ambitions. This magnificent performance indicates a future rich in sporting success, and I am convinced that many other victories await you"
