Visma-Lease a Bike has no intention of giving up and will continue to fight all the way to Paris, but the team's troubles are far from over: now there is concern for Matteo Jorgenson, who appears to be dealing with health issues. The American, who showed clear signs of difficulty in the last stage, finished at the back of the peloton and the medical staff has decided to isolate him from the rest of the team to allow him to recover as quickly as possible.
«We are keeping him separate from the group. We hope he recovers so he can be useful in the final week» explained team manager Marc Reef, confirming that the priority is to get Jorgenson back in top condition for the decisive moment of the race.
Despite the gap accumulated by Pogacar, Visma continues to believe in their leader's chances. «We will continue to fight all the way to Paris. So far Pogacar has been superior, but we continue to look ahead. Jonas always needs time to build momentum in a grand tour; we saw that at the Giro d'Italia too», Reef emphasized.
The team's conviction stems mainly from the course profile. The third week will feature the longest and most selective climbs of the entire Grande Boucle, terrain that historically favors the Dane. «We can't wait to tackle the longest ascents. We know they suit Jonas's characteristics better and, relatively speaking, it's precisely in the third week that he often manages to express his maximum level» added the Visma manager.
The final part of the Tour promises spectacle indeed, with two passages over Alpe d'Huez set to reshape, at least in part, the general classification. Even Pogacar, despite his advantage, has urged caution, reminding everyone that it is possible to lose more than three minutes in a single day.
