The tenth stage of the Tour de France delivered strong emotions and surprises, and Remco Evenepoel was undoubtedly one of the main protagonists. With an unexpected finish at Le Lioran on the Massif Central, the Belgian demonstrated his resilience, overcoming a difficult moment and delivering a hard blow, especially psychological, to his rivals in the general classification.
Yet it was not an easy day for Remco, who six kilometers from the uphill finish was dropped from the small group of Vingegaard, Seixas, and Lipowitz. The situation seemed critical, as accumulated fatigue raised fears of a significant time loss. However, the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe rider showed he had an extra gear. He recovered on the descent and in the final kilometer he truly impressed with an acceleration that put his rivals on the ropes and gained time on everyone in the standings. Second at the finish, 32 seconds behind Pogacar, Evenepoel recovered 12 seconds on Vingegaard (plus 6 seconds of time bonus) and 59 seconds on Del Toro: he is now third overall, 4'06" behind the yellow jersey of Pogacar and just half a minute behind second-placed Vingegaard.
"UAE was very strong again throughout the day – explains Evenepoel, 26 years old. I had a difficult moment, but I kept fighting at my own pace. I felt I could easily recover from the effort." He then expressed satisfaction with the result: "I give myself a nine out of ten." And with self-irony he added: "I hope the typical Belgian attitude doesn't come out now to downplay the negative aspects."
In any case, Evenepoel looks ahead: we are only at the midpoint of the Tour, and today's stage showed Remco's character and determination, as he overcame a difficult moment and transformed it into an opportunity to strike a blow against his rivals. The race is still very long.
