It will be a bittersweet start to the week at UAE Team Emirates-XRG. On one hand, Jan Christen (who suffered a bad fall on Saturday in the early stages of the Milano-Sanremo) will undergo surgery to resolve the collarbone fracture sustained over the weekend, while on the other hand the team will joyfully welcome the return to the peloton after 229 days of Filippo Baroncini.
Both pieces of news were announced by the same Mauro Gianetti's outfit, which the day after the sought-after victory at the Classicissima by Tadej Pogacar, took care to inform fans and insiders both about the next steps for the Swiss rider and about the seasonal debut, at the Volta a Catalunya, of the twenty-five-year-old from Massa Lombarda.
"Unfortunately, Jan Christen suffered a fracture to his left collarbone following the crash he sustained at the Milano-Sanremo" declared the medical director of UAE Adrian Rotunno, adding that the Swiss rider "will undergo surgery in Zurich on Monday before beginning his recovery under the supervision of the team's medical staff".
"Nice to be back with the family" wrote Baroncini instead on his Instagram account, sharing the team's post regarding the call-up for the Catalan stage race which, starting tomorrow, will see him racing for the first time since August 6th, the date when, at the Tour of Poland, in a terrible crash he suffered fractures to his left collarbone, face (in multiple places) and cervical vertebra.
In Spanish territory, the winner of the last Baloise Belgium Tour, confirmed by UAE Team Emirates through 2027 during his rehabilitation, will race alongside Jay Vine, Brandon McNulty, Ivo Oliveira, Adrià Pericas, Marc Soler and Joao Almeida, the designated leader to whom Baroncini will provide all possible support during a week of racing that, from a personal standpoint, is hoped to give him the first positive sensations of the year and, above all, the happiness of finally being able to do what he loves most.
