Many winter sports enthusiasts know Primoz Roglic well for his early career in ski jumping: indeed, the Slovenian has decided these days to put his skis back on and cheer for his compatriots competing in the Milano-Cortina Olympics.
"It's definitely different to come to the Olympics as a spectator, but I can say it's truly exciting to be here and watch my compatriots racing down the slopes".
Roglic is a very visible presence these days and it's easy to spot him: after attending the opening of Casa Slovenia in Cortina on February 8th, he was seen trackside following the downhill races and then went to Predazzo to watch the ski jumping competitions.
"It's really different being at the Olympics and being on the spectator side. Perhaps you feel a bit more nervous, because you have no way to intervene in what will happen during the race. You can only watch and hope for the best".
Primoz Roglic enjoyed being photographed with many skiing champions, including shots with Alberto Tomba, Jure Kosir and Tina Maze.
When asked if he would like to try the Olympic track, the Slovenian cyclist smiled and said he would very much like to, but at his own pace. "Yes, I would do it, I'd like to, but not with the speed and position that athletes have today. I'll do it, but going down at my own rhythm".
He was often asked if he missed skiing and the thrill he felt when it was time to launch from the ski jump. "It's very different today, but ski jumping was my first great passion and you don't forget it. The Winter Olympics are very different from the Summer ones, and not just because they take place in very different times of the year. Today I'm happy and would do it all again, and I'm glad about the proximity of the competition venues to Slovenia, so many of my compatriots can come to Cortina and Predazzo to cheer for our guys".
Roglic will leave Italy and the Olympics today to resume training ahead of his seasonal debut at Tirreno-Adriatico, which will start on the next March 9th.
