In the 123 years since its inception in 1903 - when the extraordinary adventure of grand tours began - no Portuguese rider has ever managed to secure victory.
A fact that highlights the magnitude of Joao Almeida's ambition. "My goal will be to win the Giro d'Italia, and I'll do everything I can to make it a reality. At the Vuelta, just a few months ago, there wasn't a huge difference with Vingegaard (who is expected to officially confirm his presence in the 2026 Giro, ed.). He was coming from the Tour and probably wasn't at his peak... but neither was I. I've improved every year, and I have a feeling it could happen in 2026 too. I say this realistically," explained the UAE Emirates X·RG rider in an interview with Ciro Scognamiglio in La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Portuguese rider has a special relationship with Italy, having raced as an amateur with Trevigiani colors, and with the pink race: "The 2020 Giro was a decisive experience for me. I was young, had much to learn, and those three weeks were a beautiful journey of growth".
Almeida, born in 1998, has twice stood on the final podium of a grand tour: third in the 2023 Giro and second at the 2025 Vuelta. And to pursue his dream, he draws inspiration from the true sporting icon of his country, Cristiano Ronaldo.
"I admire him because he came from nothing, worked incredibly hard to realize himself. Moreover, he embodies great values. And can be considered the best footballer of all time. He'll always be number one for me: I haven't met him yet, but I hope it happens someday".
Perhaps wearing the pink jersey...
