A completely crazy day at the Tour de Langkawi, where in a stage you'd expect another sprint, a final twist occurs. Such a last-minute move could only come from the craziest team of all, the Unibet Tietema Rockets. British rider Zen Kyffin managed to grab his first pro victory with a practically impossible attack in the last 10 km of the race. Second place went to local hero Muhammad Nur Aiman. Arvid De Kleijn won the group sprint.
THE RACE. Long day at the Tour de Langkawi where the seventh stage of 214.9 km was disputed, with the Malaysian morning seeing the group depart from the picturesque Malacca to reach Medina. No mountain points were scheduled, but the course, especially towards the end, presented a series of challenges not to be underestimated.
The day's breakaway formed shortly after the first intermediate sprint at kilometer 26 of the race. Seven athletes tried to animate the race: Matthew Dinham (Team Picnic PostNL), Mujammad Nur Aiman Bin Rosli (Terengganu Cycling Team), Hang NG Pak (HKSI Pro Cycling Team), Yauhen Sobal (Chengdu DYC Cycling Team), Jospeh Javiniar (7Eleven Cliqq Roadbike Philippines), Ade Meis (Nusantara BYC), Muhammaf Yusri Shaari (Malaysia). The breakaway managed to gain up to about 2 minutes, but the group, led by Team Tudor's Arvid De Kleijn and Team Total Energies' leader Joris Delbove.
Today was also marked by crashes, with Alexander Kristoff and Ervid Blikra falling at 110 km from the finish line, the former European champion suffering the worst consequences and being forced to withdraw.
It seemed like it would be just another stage with the usual sprint finish, but Malaysian champion Nur Aiman remained ahead of the race with a good margin. No team in the group took responsibility for taking control of the situation, and Zen Kyffin took full advantage, literally surprising everyone with an attack about 15 km from the finish. The British rider caught the breakaway rider and then fully committed to his move, managing his advantage well against a group without a proper train that started the chase too late and in a completely disorganized manner.
At the Medina finish line, Zen Keyffin outsprinted the Malaysian national champion, thus conquering his first professional victory.
Tomorrow, the Tour de Langkawi will conclude its journey with a spectacular 180 km stage from Tangkak to Kuala Lumpur, a stage with 3 mountain points where a sprint finish is not guaranteed and the final battle is wide open.
