Jonas Vingegaard did not win today on the Angliru, and the success went to Joao Almeida, who crossed the finish line first in the thirteenth stage of the Vuelta a España. The Danish rider remained always on the Portuguese rider's wheel and, even in the final kilometers, never tried to overtake him to obtain the stage victory.
"If I'm being honest, I think Joao deserved the victory today" - said Vingegaard - "He was really good and, as I said, he deserved the victory". Yesterday, Jonas Vingegaard had said he wanted to win on the Angliru, because for him this is one of the most iconic climbs of the Vuelta, but he had also said that to win, his legs needed to be in good shape. "Obviously, I'm a bit disappointed not to have managed to win. I'm a bit sorry not to have conquered the success. But the victory went to Joao, who proved to be better".
Tomorrow's stage will conclude an exhausting two-day period in the Asturias, arriving at the Alto de la Farrapona, where the final climb of 16.9 km will have gradients approaching 14%.
"As I said, today I would have liked to win, not just for myself and the team but also for my family. Joao was good and this means I'll have to focus more on him and tomorrow there will be another important day for us".
Regarding the general classification, the Danish rider is still in the red jersey with a 46" advantage over Almeida and 2'18" over Pidcock.
"In the end, I can be happy with how this day went. I would have liked to win for my family and the team, but it was still a special day. Winning on the Angliru is something everyone wants, but I had already understood at the beginning of the last climb that Joao would aim for the victory and I just limited myself to going at my own pace".
