Great celebration for Jasper Philipsen who yesterday conquered his second victory at the Vuelta of Spain. The first success came in Novara, where he also wore the red jersey, and now the second in the eighth day of the race. The Belgian has thus secured his fifty-sixth career victory and his fifteenth in a grand tour (10 victories at the Tour de France and 5 at the Vuelta). The Flemish rider after the victory explained the difficulties for a sprinter, who must resist in mountain stages to then be able to compete in sprints.
"We absolutely cannot complain because in the end the victory is ours. I lost my teammates a few hundred meters from the finish line. I think they had set a great pace, but I couldn't stay on their wheels. I tried to talk to them, but it was complicated in the last kilometer. I had to recover alone and solve the situation, I took Bryan Coquard's wheel and I felt my legs as hard as cement, but I still managed to win. So I'm very happy with the work we did".
For Philipsen, this is his fifteenth victory in a grand tour and after the forced withdrawal from the Tour de France, this success increases his confidence and that of the team.
"It's a very difficult Vuelta, but with two victories it will be easier now. I had heavy legs, but I managed to win, so I'm really happy. My fifteenth victory in a grand tour? Every victory is special. It's never easy to win and that's why each one has an important meaning. Now we are more confident and know that we can move forward without worries".
