Danish television host and cycling commentator Brian Nygaard has sparked the fury of Jonas Vingegaard's fans, when, during his television broadcast, he said that the two-time Tour winner should change his objectives. In Denmark, a case has thus erupted and, as happens in all media trials, there are those who blame and those who defend.
Nygaard is a well-known name in the cycling world for having worked in the press offices of many teams and was the one who handled the press conference in which Bjarne Riis admitted his doping use in 2007.
Subsequently, he worked for Sky, Leopard – Trek and then Orica-GreenEDGE, before moving to television studios, where he hosts sports shows related to cycling.
"Before the Tour, I had already wondered if Jonas Vingegaard was a secondary figure in the Pogačar era and if he was no longer capable of competing with him – Nygaard said in his podcast The Cycling - I believe we can now say that this is the case. He could not offer any resistance to Pogačar."
In Paris, during Vingegaard's last Tour de France press conference, the Danish champion had said he had a double form during the race: the best in some stages, but also the worst in some days.
Regarding this, Nygaard was very critical, arguing that for Vingegaard it is time to aim for other objectives, more within his reach and especially to exploit the races where Pogačar is not present.
"Vingegaard must be the best version of himself to be able to challenge Pogačar. But I had the feeling that he probably did not bring out his best in this Tour". The sports commentator and host then focused on the statements that Trine Marie Vingegaard Hansen, Jonas Vingegaard's wife, gave to the newspaper Politiken before the Tour de France. According to the cycling expert, the Visma-Lease a Bike champion should not think about staying at home, but spend more time racing, pointing out that during the year the races he participates in are few for a rider who wants to win the Tour de France.
"Perhaps he should do other things. I'm not saying he should become a plumber, but maybe he should set different objectives. And I repeat: he must spend more time on a bike with a number on his back, because that's how you win more races, especially when Pogačar is not there. If Jonas Vingegaard were to win the next Vuelta a España, according to Nygaard, he should consider participating in the Giro d'Italia, because perhaps it would be unrealistic for him to win the Tour de France again."
In 2024, Vingegaard finished 6'17" behind Pogačar, while this year, the gap was 4'24". He has certainly improved, but according to Nygaard, this result is not enough and cannot make one think of a victory in 2026 by the Dane. Meanwhile, in Denmark, people are talking about Vingegaard and what he should do in the future. Since Nygaard asked for the audience's opinion in his broadcast, cycling enthusiasts have gone wild and everyone is giving their opinion on the future of this champion.
Vingegaard is ready to leave for Spain, where he will race the Vuelta, which will start on August 23rd. This time, the Visma-Lease a Bike rider will be the sole captain and without Pogačar in the race, the final victory could smile upon him.
