There will be 11 Italian riders at the Tour de France, three more than last year, and they will compete for 8 different World Tour teams. The rider everyone is waiting for is Jonathan Milan, who with Lidl-Trek will try to win immediately and wear the yellow jersey in the first stage. The Friulian is making his debut in the yellow race, but he is a powerful sprinter and could even imagine arriving in Paris as the points classification leader.
With Milan in Lidl-Trek, there will also be Simone Consonni, a talented rider with a generous heart: his task will be to pilot Milan in the sprint, launching him as fast as possible towards the finish line.
For Ineos Grenadiers, there will be Filippo Ganna, who can showcase his Italian time trial champion jersey. The Piedmontese starts with good ambitions, but it won't be easy to be faster than Remco Evenepoel, the current world and Olympic time trial champion.
Edoardo Affini, wearing the Visma-Lease a Bike jersey, is part of the group that will have to watch over Vingegaard: the rider from Mantua is also good at navigating fast finishes and is the European time trial champion, so he can be used in multiple roles in the team.
This will also be the Tour of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team of Fabian Cancellara, and the Swiss team will bring an experienced rider like Matteo Trentin and also a sprinter like Alberto Dainese, who has participated in the Tour only once in 2022. Trentin is the man who can make a difference - with 7 participations in the yellow race and three stage wins, he will know how to put his abilities at the service of others. Tudor will have Alaphilippe and Hirschi at the start, who must prove they can do something important in the Grande Boucle.
The XDS Astana Team will also have two Italians at the start, Davide Ballerini and Simone Velasco, who will try to do their best to help the team win stages. For Ballerini, it will be his third Tour de France, while Velasco will be making his second appearance after 2022.
In the Soudal – Quick Step, which will be led by Remco Evenepoel, we find Mattia Cattaneo, returning to the Tour after two participations, in 2021 when he finished twelfth in the general classification, and then in 2022 where he finished further back. The rider from Bergamo is a good time trialist and can also defend himself in the mountains, but in this Tour de France he will be entirely committed to supporting Remco Evenepoel.
At the service of Primoz Roglic in Red Bull – Bora Hansgrohe, there will also be Gianni Moscon. The rider from Trentino knows how to do his job well and is a rider who, in the right condition, can still achieve important results. In this season he hasn't shone, and here at the Tour de France, he will have the opportunity to do his job well, which consists of protecting Roglic and the German Lipowitz, who will have ambitions for the general classification.
To finish the list of Italians in the race, there is Vincenzo Albanese: the guy born in the province of Salerno, 28 years old, will make his Tour de France debut with the EF Education EasyPost jersey. For Albanese, this is a great opportunity to take another step forward in his career.
