Yesterday, the thirteenth edition of LaStelvioSantini took place, the cycling granfondo that every year attracts hundreds of enthusiasts from around the world to pedal (and conquer, to put it that way) the challenging and spectacular roads of Alta Valtellina.
An international event that saw the participation of 1,800 registered participants from 50 nations, confirming itself as a reference event for amateur sports and lovers of great alpine climbs, also thanks to the arrival at 2,757 meters of the Stelvio Pass.
As per the now consolidated regulations, rankings are built solely by recording the timed climbs of the routes. A precise choice by the organization managed by US Bormiese and title sponsor Santini Cycling, with the aim of reducing the risk of accidents during descents. In this sense, the competitors with the best total times on the climbs are awarded the King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain jerseys.
Martina Cavallo and Fabio Lanzone were the fastest on the climbs of the Long route, which at 124 kilometers crossed Rogorbello, the feared Mortirolo climb and naturally the climb to the Stelvio Pass.
In the Medium route of 108 kilometers, by summing the time spent on the Rogorbello and Stelvio climbs, the Queen of the Mountain jersey was awarded to Mariagrazia Molteni and the King of the Mountain jersey to Simone Donghi. Last but not least, Carmen Broger and Denis Taccola distinguished themselves on the Short route of 64 kilometers with only the climb to the Stelvio Pass.
This year, the 2025 edition takes on a truly special meaning: it celebrates the bicentenary of the construction of the Stelvio Pass Road. This masterpiece of nineteenth-century engineering, inaugurated on July 6, 1825, by the Austrian Empire to connect Lombardy to Tyrol and stimulate trade, remains a vibrant symbol of union between places, cultures, and people. At 2,757 meters above sea level and with 88 hairpin turns, the Stelvio holds the record for the highest drivable road in Europe. Two centuries after its creation, it continues to enchant travelers, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers, offering an unparalleled scenario for events that combine passion, history, and breathtaking landscapes.
