The curtain has risen on the 86th Appennine Tour Memorial Tarcisio Persegona which will take place on Tuesday, June 24th: 19 teams announced at the start, with 3 WorldTeams present: XDS Astana, UAE Team Emirates, InterMarché Wanty. To date, 133 riders are registered to participate in one of the most fascinating races ever.
Expected finish between 4:40 PM and 5:15 PM. A celebration that will be preceded for the first time by the Women's Appennine Tour which will arrive on Via XX Settembre between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM (the race will be presented on Wednesday 11th at 11:00 AM at the BPER Banca headquarters in Genoa).
The event returns to the date of June 24th. This will be the fifth time the race is held on this date. In 2004, Damiano Cunego won. In 2009, Vincenzo Nibali. In 2014, Sonny Cobrelli. In 2021, Ben Hermans.
The route proposes the 12th finish on Via XX Settembre, 26 years after the first race conclusion in 1999. The passage through Guardia is confirmed for the fifth consecutive year, after the crowd success of previous editions. The start from Arquata Scrivia is also replicated, which has now "adopted" U.S. Pontedecimo Cycling with great enthusiasm.
A race of just over 200 kilometers with very nervous terrain and 2,898 meters of elevation gain. After gathering in Arquata Scrivia, there will be a transfer in front of the Elah Dufour Novi facility where the official start will take place at 11:45 AM. The Appennine Tour, as always, does not forget the past: the Km zero will be dedicated to Knight Flavio Repetto, who for many years believed in the sporting and social value of the Appennine Tour.
After passing in front of the Champions Museum in Novi and Pasturana, theaters of many gatherings in recent editions, the race will get into full swing.
The Castagnola Pass after 55 km will be the first difficulty of the day. After Giovi and Crocetta d'Orero, the decisive part of the race will arrive: first the hairpins along the Bocchetta with slopes up to 18%. Then at Pietralavezzara, a left turn will lead, after a challenging descent towards Isoverde, to tackle the Guardia: slopes of 7 and 8% to reach the 500-meter wall with slopes up to 21% in the Lencisa area.
A steep descent towards Genoa with a passage under the San Giorgio Bridge, Sopraelevata, and then a grand finale on Via XX Settembre.
Five Mountain Grand Prizes. The highest peak of the race is located at Guardia at 733 meters. The kilometers in the metropolitan city of Genoa are 141, equal to 71% of the total.
The best overall placement in the 86th Appennine Tour combined with the 62nd Trofeo Laigueglia will award the Liguria Challenge in its eighth edition.
The 86th Appennine Tour Three Hills Cup will also be the 73rd City of Genoa Grand Prix and the 32nd Liguria Region Trophy. The race is part of the Regions Cup, conceived and realized by the Professional Cycling League with the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces.
For flying prizes: points will be distributed to the first three at each checkpoint, with prizes for the top five based on the overall checkpoint classification.
