With the arrival of the beautiful season, Bormio and Alta Valtellina are preparing to welcome cycling enthusiasts from all over the world. The legendary roads leading to the Stelvio and Mortirolo Passes, monuments of great cycling coveted and challenged by thousands of visitors every year, are open from all sides.
After the opening of the Mortirolo during the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia and the Bormio and South Tyrolean sides of the Stelvio, as well as the Umbrail Pass, from May 28th, the seasonal "debut" of the Gavia Pass will be awaited for a few more days, expected in the first days of June.
A SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY FOR STELVIO
This year, the Stelvio Pass road celebrates an exceptional historic milestone: 200 years since its construction. Two centuries of history that have seen this asphalt serpent become one of the most iconic and feared climbs in the international cycling landscape, as well as eleven times the Cima Coppi of the Giro d'Italia. 88 hairpin turns, 102 kilometers, and 3,104 meters of total elevation gain, its iconic climb winds through rocky walls and high-altitude landscapes, offering one of the most intense and coveted experiences in the world of cycling.
Born from the strategic need to connect Milan to Vienna without crossing Swiss territory, what began as an imperial connection project has transformed over the centuries into an authentic bridge between cultures, uniting three regions: Lombardy, South Tyrol, and Val Müstair (Switzerland). The most anticipated moment of the celebrations is scheduled for July 5th and 6th, 2025, when visitors can taste the gastronomic specialties of the three regions through dedicated stands, while historical reenactments with horse-drawn carriages and vintage car parades will recreate the atmosphere of past times.
MORTIROLO REDISCOVERS THE PINK RACE
The Mortirolo Pass, etched in the history of the Giro d'Italia thanks to Marco Pantani's feat, opened the season with the 17th stage of the Pink Race on May 28th, 2025. After departing from San Michele all'Adige, the world's best riders traversed the Val di Non and Val di Sole, before tackling the Tonale Pass, descending towards Ponte di Legno and, from Monno, the feared Mortirolo, before the Bormio finish line, dominated by Mexican Isaac del Toro in the Pink Jersey.
With gradients approaching 20%, this 13-kilometer climb represents a true challenge for climbers, capable of testing legs and determination.
GIANTS WITHOUT TRAFFIC WITH ENJOY STELVIO VALTELLINA
Making these climbs even more special will be the return of Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina, the initiative that allows experiencing the emotion of the mythical passes of the Bormio territory in complete tranquility and away from the nuisance of cars and motorcycles.
Starting from May 25th, a rich calendar of summer closures to motorized traffic has opened, extending until September 1st. In addition to the events with Mortirolo (June 14th and August 29th) and Gavia (June 13th, July 10th, and August 31st), the initiative will also involve some of the less-known but equally fascinating climbs of the Bormio territory, such as Campo Moro (August 2nd, at night), Spluga Pass (June 29th), and the ascent to Cancano Lakes (June 12th, July 11th, September 1st).
The Granfondo Stelvio Santini (June 8th), the Re Stelvio Mapei (July 13th) and the Scalata Cima Coppi (August 30th) complete the panorama of a long summer on two wheels, offering new opportunities to celebrate the 200 years of the most beloved giant by cyclists worldwide.
