184 riders started from Albania to conquer the pink jersey, but in the end, only three made it to the podium at the foot of the Palatine, and Richard Carapaz is among them, finishing third behind winner Yates and second-placed Del Toro.
How important was it to reach the Giro d'Italia podium?
"It was important for me to be on this podium. I think we'll be very happy. For me, this was a true podium, not a consolation prize. We are very satisfied with what we've achieved. In the end, the journey to Rome was long. We knew our objective, and I think it was a beautiful spectacle. We enjoyed ourselves and are leaving satisfied with what we've done."
This morning there were talks that you would have few chances of winning a grand tour. Are you returning home with some bitterness or do you still believe you can fight for something big?
"I don't think that will be the case. In the end, we got back on track and knew we had a great opportunity. I think I've proven to myself that I can do it, and we won't stop trying as long as I have the strength to do so."
Your contract expires this year, but there are rumors of an imminent renewal. Can you tell us something about that?
"I think now, after this result, we will certainly communicate it."
Thinking about Saturday's stage, where Yates and his team's strategy took you and Del Toro out of contention for the win, do you have any regrets?
"No, no, no! As I've already said, in the end, we didn't even get a chance to exchange words with Del Toro. I think the Giro is my favorite race. I've always said since the first time I came here that I always take something from this race, so I think the Giro is my race."
At 32, you're still very competitive. Can we say that you still have your best years ahead?
"I don't know if the best is yet to come. I think we still have a few years to try. For now, we'll simply enjoy what we've done so far."
Your season will continue. What is your next objective?
"My second part of the season is clear. I'll race in Switzerland in a couple of weeks and then go directly to the Tour."
