The sixteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia was very difficult, with rain making the roads dangerous and crashes that forced important riders like Primoz Roglic to withdraw. "I think it was a truly tough day for everyone and I couldn't be more proud of the team's work. I couldn't be in this position without their help, I gave my maximum with the energy I had and certainly this is just a thank you to the team because they passed on all their experience to me and I'm super happy because I reached the finish line without a gram of energy and I hope the next days will be better for my legs," Isaac Del Toro explains in the press conference.
This is the third week of the race and many riders struggled on the first day of racing after recovery. Isaac Del Toro is also beginning to show fatigue, but there will be other difficult days where climbs could overturn the general classification. "I am one of those people who believe every time they attack, even if only a gram of energy remains. For sure I'll be there, I'll try and I'll fight until the finish line. I don't want to rely on self-confidence, but I want to believe I can do it."
The general classification has definitely changed, with Ayuso who collapsed and Simon Yates of Visma Lease a Bike who is in second place 26 seconds behind the Mexican. Carapaz also did well and is now in third place with a delay of 31". "I think that like us, Visma-Lease a Bike tried to increase speed uphill and there was a bit of headwind. Certainly, Simon spent a lot and the team also spent energy, but in the end they took advantage of the steep climbs in their favor and when Carapaz attacked, I tried to defend myself. I hoped to be able to arrive with him, but in the end I didn't have the best legs to collaborate with him. I fought until the end, but Carapaz was stronger. The team was with me and I did my best until the finish line."
Juan Ayuso dropped today and his delay from the pink jersey is 13'27", a gap impossible to recover. "Juan is going through difficult moments with two crashes and all this in the morning doesn't make him feel good and we're trying to manage him a bit. As can happen to everyone, he had a bad day, but in the end I didn't talk to him because I didn't have time, but later I will talk to him."
The gaps have narrowed and on Sunday they will arrive in Rome for the grand finale. Del Toro thinks he can win this Giro d'Italia, but he knows there are many strong riders with great experience in the classification. "I think the first four in the classification are super dangerous because there are very different riders and each has different styles and we must be careful, but they are all dangerous for the pink jersey."
