Egan Bernal was one of the protagonists of the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia that closed yesterday's second week of racing. The Colombian, supported by an attacking team, chose to give momentum to the race by starting from far away, attacking already on Monte Grappa. He did it again on the second climb of the day, that of Dori, helping to drop the group of favorites and distance Primoz Roglic, who soon showed difficulties.
"I really don't know what happened to him - Bernal commented after the finish, referring to the Slovenian's defeat - The last climb wasn't extremely steep, but it's the type of climb where if you give up, you can lose a lot of time. I also suffered a bit in the last meters, it was really difficult to keep up with those who were feeling better, but I think we did well to try something. We are INEOS Grenadiers, we must move, this is clear".
Bernal is eighth in the general classification and knows that everything will be decided during the last week starting tomorrow. Today there will be an opportunity to rest but also to reflect on the strategies that will be implemented in the final stages.
"I tried to give my best on Monte Grappa and I found myself with Thymen Arensman, who is also very strong, and Richard Carapaz, who if he has the right legs, is the type of rider who helps you. So it was nice to be with him, we collaborated well. But we had the impression that the group behind was also going very fast and then the others recovered".
Bernal is hopeful and admitted that every day, he and his Ineos will go on the attack and that in the end, this will yield results.
"As we have said many times, we have nothing to lose. At least I have nothing to lose. From tomorrow, every day there will be an opportunity to try something, certainly we will leave nothing untried".
