Yesterday, what was supposed to be a quiet stage turned out to be a day full of pitfalls, where crashes once again are deciding the fate of this Giro d'Italia. Today will end the second week of the race and it will be an important test for all the general classification riders. Isaac Del Toro is still in the pink jersey and despite the crash, he managed to restart without problems.
"It was a crazy start, everyone wanted to go, I was feeling good: when I saw the road was a bit narrow in the first climbs, so I moved to the front - said Del Toro - I fell behind when the crash happened, someone hit me from behind and I fell too. I got up very quickly and restarted immediately, but there was a lot of confusion and I didn't understand who was ahead and who was behind. When I saw Visma and Alpecin, I understood I was back in the main group, but there was really a lot of confusion and my teammates were worried and on the radio were asking me where I was".
Something in the general classification has changed and now behind Del Toro is Simon Yates from Visma - Lease a Bike, with a delay of 1'20" and also Richard Carapaz and Damiano Caruso have gained some time, while Ayuso is third at 1'26".
"We are not happy to gain time in this way - said Del Toro referring to the riders who crashed like Giulio Ciccone - I do not feel sadness, but something different. I'm sorry for those who got hurt, I wish them a quick recovery. The race? Visma accelerated, but not to defend. Their intent was to win the stage with Kooij, but they didn't succeed".
Soon they will enter the last and decisive week of the pink race, where anything can happen and Del Toro is thinking only of staying focused and not making mistakes.
"My body and my head are the same as a week ago and a month ago and even yesterday. I know I'm in shape and the people around me give me confidence. I also understand the fans who are optimistic, but I must try to stay focused. I think everything will go well and I try to believe in myself as I always have. Sometimes I joke with others and say that I'm not too good at cycling".
Isaac Del Toro is satisfied with his position and thinks he is in the right position to feel protected.
"I think it's a mix of luck and being in the right place at the right time. I am learning to race in grand tours and I must always be careful. Yesterday went well. I can say I'm not very lucky, but not very unlucky either. I didn't fall, but I ended up on the ground because of someone else. I'm sorry for those who crashed, but I must also say that I was lucky".
