On Wednesday, May 28th, Bormio will once again be a protagonist of the Giro d'Italia, hosting the finish of the 17th stage of the 2025 edition. It will be a special day for Alta Valtellina, with a long tradition linked to the Pink Race: one of its most precious pearls is preparing to welcome cyclists, fans, and cycling enthusiasts with a rich program of side events and initiatives in a territory that this year celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Stelvio Pass road.
The following day, Thursday, May 29th, Morbegno will instead bid farewell to the start of the 18th stage heading towards Cesano Maderno.
HIGH-ALTITUDE CHALLENGE BETWEEN TONALE AND MORTIROLO
The 154 kilometers from San Michele all'Adige to Bormio will be among the toughest of the final week of the Giro. After crossing Val di Non and Val di Sole, the group will tackle the Tonale Pass, followed by the descent towards Ponte di Legno. From there, the real selection will begin: the Mortirolo Pass, with its 13 kilometers and double-digit gradients, promises to make the difference.
A few kilometers from the finish, the Motte climb could provide space for the last attacks before the finish line in via Btg. Morbegno in Bormio, expected between 17:00 and 17:30. For those who don't want to miss a moment, the entire stage will be broadcast live on a big screen in the finish area and in Piazza V Alpini.
The lucky winner will receive, directly from the hands of Bormio Mayor Silvia Cavazzi and artist Marco Alberti, the special prize "The Heartbeat of Stelvio", a Carrara marble sculpture that celebrates the 200 years of the Stelvio Pass road, an emblem of mountain cycling and often decisive in the history of the Giro.
A CELEBRATION FOR THE ENTIRE CITY
The anticipation for the Giro has already begun: 400 students from the "Alberti" High School have organized a pink jersey flash mob at Golf Bormio, with dances and choreographies inspired by the Pink Race and the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
On the day of the stage, May 28th, starting from 13:00, Piazza V Alpini will host "Giroland", an animated village with games, music, and prizes in collaboration with RTL 102.5.
The celebration will continue throughout the city: the Cristall Bar Mountain Bistrot will offer Street Food and local delicacies throughout the day, while from 17:30 the Bar Bormio will organize a Music & Pasta Party.
The Pachamama Sports Store will welcome visitors from 18:00 with an Aperitivo & Shop, where it will also be possible to purchase Giro-related products and souvenirs. The evening will conclude with music from 21:00 at the Clem Pub, with a special Jukebox Night, continuing the festivities late into the night.
In the Valtellina Hospitality, set up at the Nevada Hotel in partnership with Banca Popolare di Sondrio, invited guests can enjoy the moment in style, tasting local typical products that tell the gastronomic richness of Valtellina and experiencing the warm Bormio hospitality.
"The Giro d'Italia represents one of the most prestigious cycling competitions at an international level, capable of uniting passion, history, and territory, bringing with it values that we have always deeply shared," declared Mario Alberto Pedranzini, Delegated Councilor and General Manager of Banca Popolare di Sondrio. "Being alongside the city of Bormio on the occasion of this important event means reaffirming the commitment of Banca Popolare di Sondrio in favor of sport as an engine of social cohesion, well-being, and growth. But it also means enhancing an extraordinary territory, a symbolic and fascinating place that well represents the identity and values of our Bank. Events of this magnitude represent an international showcase for our valleys, attract visitors, promote local excellence, and generate important tourist and economic impacts."
For photography and cycling history enthusiasts, not to be missed is the exhibition "La Valtellina in Giro", set up at Mulino Salacrist from May 24th to June 2nd. The exhibition allows reliving the most exciting moments of the great Valtellina climbs, capturing the epic essence of the Giro d'Italia through evocative images that tell the story of this competition in a territory of champions and legendary feats.
GIRO-E ALSO ARRIVES IN BORMIO
The Bormio finish line awaits not only the Giro champions but also the protagonists of the Giro-E. The 14th stage of the now traditional event with pedal-assisted bicycles that accompanies the Pink Race will start from Tirano: 61.7 kilometers with ascents to the Mortirolo Pass and the Motte climb, with an expected arrival around 16:00.
The Giro-E formula combines sport, technology, and environmental respect, offering amateur cyclists the emotion of riding the same roads as professionals, but with the help of pedal-assisted bicycles. An initiative that looks to the future and promotes more sustainable mobility, perfectly in line with the values of the Bormio territory.
"We are ready to welcome the Giro d'Italia caravan and can't wait to applaud the cyclists competing on our roads. For us, it is an honor to be the finish location of a stage of the Pink Race: as in past years, we will show the best face of Bormio and reserve a warm welcome to cyclists, technicians, and all enthusiasts," said Bormio Mayor Silvia Cavazzi. "I am certain that May 28th will be remembered as a great day of celebration in the name of sport. An international event like the Giro d'Italia offers us extraordinary media exposure: the cameras will immortalize the splendid scenery of our mountains that are beautiful in late spring just as they are in winter with snow. It's a great preview ahead of the Olympics, in a wonderful year for us when we celebrate the bicentennial of the Stelvio road that has been the scene of epic Giro d'Italia stages."
