The stage ending in Siena yesterday turned the Giro d'Italia general classification upside down: Primoz Roglic had surrendered his pink jersey on Saturday to Diego Ulissi in the stage ending in Castelraimondo, but yesterday the Sienese gravel roads saw the Slovenian slip from third to tenth place overall, with a delay of 2'25" from Isaac Del Toro, the new classification leader.
The Slovenian fell in the second gravel section when Chris Hamilton, McNulty, and Pidcock went down in front of him. The day continued with the lead group setting a frantic pace, and Roglic was forced to stop again due to a mechanical problem with his bike. The team car was not nearby, so the Slovenian increased his delay.
"We'll see at the end what this defeat will mean," a disappointed Roglic said at the finish line. "It was a very difficult day, and despite the obvious difficulties, we didn't give up and continued to race our own race."
In Siena, the victory went to Wout van Aert, while the pink jersey was conquered by Isaac Del Toro, who finished second in a two-man sprint with the Flemish rider.
"We'll see what else we can do. One day you lose, another day you gain seconds. We'll see at the end what this time loss will mean for the general classification. There's still a lot of road ahead before the end of the race. We'll need to recover and prepare for the next stages."
Today is a rest day in Pisa, and tomorrow the pink race will restart with a time trial in which the Slovenian could do well.
Among the classification contenders, Roglic is the one who could perform best in the time trial from Lucca to Pisa, considering that the route is 28.6 kilometers long and that both Ayuso and Del Toro have not obtained significant results in such long time trials so far.
"Now we just need to think about recovering in the best way possible and then we'll move forward day by day."
