Among the participants of the upcoming Giro d'Italia, there are six riders who, if successful, would enter the exclusive club of stage winners in all three grand tours.
Among them, the most renowned name is undoubtedly Wout van Aert, who, with 9 victories at the Tour de France and 3 at the Vuelta already under his belt, will try in every way to complete the circle at the 2025 Corsa Rosa, a mission that will also see Romain Bardet (four stages at the Grande Boucle and one at the Vuelta in his career), Rafal Majka (3 stages at the Tour and 2 at the Vuelta), Simon Clarke (one stage at the Tour and two at the Vuelta), Adam Yates (one stage at the Tour and one at the Vuelta) and Wout Poels involved.
The 1987 Dutch rider from XDS Astana, winner at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc at the 2023 Tour and at Guadarrama at the same year's Vuelta, could, however, unlike his colleagues, write an additional small piece of history because, if successful, he would become the oldest rider to achieve this feat, snatching the title from none other than Roger De Vlaeminck.
The "Gitano", in fact, completed the trilogy in 1984, in Gis jersey, by winning the eighth stage of the Vuelta Espana on April 25, 1984, at 36 years, 8 months, and 1 day, an age slightly over the 36 years, 7 months, and 3 days with which Lucien Van Impe had just touched the seniority record the previous year.
Poels, who turned 37 last October 1st, would thus overtake both Belgians if he were to raise his arms to the sky at the Giro, giving himself and Dutch cycling a satisfaction to be truly proud of and a record that could indeed last a very long time.
