SPRINT AND UCI REGULATIONS: WHAT REALLY CHANGES AND WHY CELEBRATIONS WILL CONTINUE

No one, not even the UCI, which can be criticized for many other decisions, intends to take away this satisfaction. Why this clarification? Because after our Benjamin Le Goff's article published yesterday about lead-out riders, someone went further and this morning on social media - after the publication of an article in Corriere della Sera - the news of a possible ban on celebrations for sprint winners bounced around. And many readers, as well as professionals, contacted us to ask about this news. Let's then put things in order and, above all, look at the UCI regulations. Among deletions, adjustments, and novelties written in red, the article in question is 2.12.007 - titled in the French version "Barème des faits de course relatifs aux épreuves sur route" - page 110 of the Regulations dedicated to road races. This is the chapter reserved for possible infractions and related sanctions. Paragraph 5 of this article is dedicated to INTERMEDIATE AND FINAL SPRINTS and includes only two families of infractions. 5.1 Deviation from the chosen lane, obstructing or endangering another rider and irregular sprint (particularly by pulling another rider's jersey or saddle) with intimidation or threat, head-butt, knee, elbow, shoulder, or hand, etc.). 5.2 Rider who slows down during a sprint and endangers other riders (teammate of a sprinter who deliberately remains in the slipstream of other riders, riders celebrating in the group, talking on the radio, or taking hands off the handlebars inside the group). For point 5.1, no explanation is needed; at most, one can argue about the decisions taken or not taken by judges at the end of a sprint. Point 5.2 is equally clear and explicitly talks about "Rider who slows down during a sprint and endangers other riders": it goes without saying that a sprinter fighting for victory will never fall into this category because they will never intentionally slow down. And in the explanatory parenthesis that the legislator adds, the cases that will be punished are clearly listed, cases that concern all lead-out riders because they talk about riders IN the group and not engaged in the sprint. Ipotizziamo una volata con Van Aert davanti a Kooij (o viceversa, per altro cosa gia' successa in una tappa) ad un certo punto, magari all'ultima curva, quello dietro indugia in uscita "rallentando" quelli a ruota, manovra che si identifica come "farel'elastico" (lo insegnavano, una volta, i DS quando incominciavi a correre), come decidono che uno dei due fosse il gregario, essendo entrambi "i velocisti" della Visma? Regola idiota, nel passaggio "rallenta", l'UCI ha perso un altra occasione per "non" complicarci la vita. Senza parole!

L'unica regola che ha senso è quella che ogni velocista deve fare la sua volata nella sua corsia "virtuale".
