YEAR-END PHOTOGRAPHS

What image remains with me from this 2024 about to go into the archives? Many, different, some faded and others crystal clear. The most beautiful bear the signature of Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel, the Slovenian absolute protagonist from beginning to end of this magnificent season, from Strade Bianche to Lombardy, with that crazy world championship that could be remembered as one of the most intense tactical follies since Coppi's Cuneo-Pinerolo, and the Belgian who struck gold in Paris with a breathtaking and rare beauty double. There's also something Italian, thanks to Jonathan Milan, who is our 2024 Oscar alongside the queen of Italian women's cycling Elisa Longo Borghini. For the Friulian, eleven road victories, Giro stages and the cyclamen jersey, plus the world title on the track enriched by a frightening world record of 4 km with a time of 3'59"153 at an average of 60.2 km/h. For the Piedmontese, the second Tour of Flanders, the first Giro, yet another world bronze for the seventh seal in the Oscar equal to Luperini. They are our pride, our present, and the most beautiful and fertile seeds capable of nourishing and growing the Italian land in this fallow period, hunting for new ambitions. But these are not the only images.

THE WATER BOTTLE. Among the photographs I'll archive in my heart's album is the water bottle, not to be confused with the one exchanged between Coppi and Bartali (July 6, 1952) - which was actually a bottle - taken by Carlo Martini, the photographer from the Olympia agency in Milan. The water bottle in question is Tadej Pogacar's, who during the Monte Grappa stage of the Giro gave it to a young fan (Mattia Scaldaferro, 12 years old) by the roadside. If we want, there's also the high-five given by Pogacar to a small fan. A shot by Luca Bettini immortalizing Pogacar in the "give me five" gesture to a six or seven-year-old child. Beautiful images for a sport that has another image.

NUMBERS. Among the photographs I'll keep in my heart, are the crazy numbers that tuttobiciweb recorded this year. As the series goes: Pogacar wins too much and takes away interest. Yes, sure. At the Tour we nearly reached 2 million readers, this year we broke through the 14 million barrier, compared to 10 million 900 thousand from a year ago. Among the most beautiful and comforting signals are my report cards declined in the feminine: widely read, never as much as this year. Confirming that girls are not the other side of the medal, but are simply the medal itself.

BLURRY IMAGE. In this year drawing to a close, we are left with the yellow and red trial cards, which will come into effect with the new year. On the contrary, I think exactly like Patrick Lefevere, CEO of Soudal-Quick Step of Remco Evenepoel: "You can't compare a one-hour race with a Dauphiné stage. And then what? Do we give points to Six Days riders? It doesn't seem like an effective system. Then there would be the question of how many riders could be on a team. Today we have 30, but if we were to include cyclocross and track riders, how many riders would we end up with?" A clear photograph of a still quite blurry situation.

Non capisco il motivo di questo continuo fastidio nel leggere confronti o paragoni con il passato.
Ciò che ha fatto Pogacar nel 2024 autorizza qualsiasi tipo di paragone perché sono imprese leggendarie.
Poi…più forte questo o quello lascia il tempo che trova.
Lui è il più forte di questo momento, magari il prossimo anno sarà bastonato da Remco o da Vingegaard (solo al Tour, purtroppo..).
Questo non toglie nulla a ciò che ha fatto vedere nel 2024.
