QUICK STEP. Brambilla e Capecchi partono dall'Australia
PROFESSIONISTI | 04/01/2017 | 09:44 La 19a edizione del Tour Down Under vedrà 19 squadre alla partenza per quella che promette di essere una gara molto combattuta. I velocisti avranno diverse opportunità per testare la loro condizione e ottenere una prima vittoria nella nuova stagione, ma saranno ancora una volta scalatori e attaccanti a giocarsi il successo finale nelle tappe di Paracombe e Willunga Hill.
Per il secondo anno consecutivo, Petr Vakoč sarà al via della gara inaugurale del World Tour come leader della Quick-Step Floors: «È una bella gara e non vedo l'ora di affrontarla. Gli organizzatori stanno facendo un ottimo lavoro ogni anno, il percorso è molto bello. L'anno scorso mi sono trovato bene ad iniziare la mia stagione qui e spero che le cose vadano allo stesso modo anche questa volta. Vorrei lottare per una vittoria di tappa e sono sicuro ci sarà qualche possibilità per me».
In Australia comincia la stagione anche Gianluca Brambilla e sarà la sua prima volta: «Inizio il mio ottavo anno da prof e non ero mai partito così presto. Sarà una nuova esperienza e sono curioso di scoprire questa corsa. Ora mi sento bene, ma correre in un evento top è totalmente diverso da pedalare in allenamento. Non sarà facile fare il passaggio dall'inverno europeo all'estate australiana, ma partiremo presto e spero di adattarmi alle condizioni».
A guidare il team sarà il direttore sportivo Rik van Slycke: «Il percorso è simile a quello degli anni precedenti. Il penultimo giorno i corridori affronteranno due volte la salita di Willunga Hill, e quella tappa dovrebbe decidere la generale. Dobbiamo prestare attenzione anche alle tappe che si disputeranno vicino alla costa, perché il vento potrebbe avere un impatto sul risultato. La nostra squadra avrà un paio di carte da giocare e Petr è una di queste».
Con Gianluca Brambilla e Petr Vakoč ci saranno Jack Bauer, Eros Capecchi, Dries Devenyns, Enric Mas e Martin Velits.
The 19th edition of the Tour Down Under
will see 19 teams line up at the start for what promises to be a hotly
contested race. The sprinters will have several opportunities to test
their legs and get a maiden victory in the new season, but it will be
once again the climbers and the puncheurs who are set to bring the race
to life and fight for the overall win, with the stages to Paracombe
(where the Tour Down Under will travel only for the second time in
history) and Willunga Hill marked on the agenda by the riders who’ll vie
for the ochre jersey.
For the second year in a row, Petr Vakoc will be at the start of the
World Tour opener as the leader of the Quick-Step Floors Cycling Team,
and the young Czech, who in 2016 has enjoyed his finest season to date,
is keen on making the most out of this opportunity.
“It’s a nice race and I’m really looking forward to it. The organizers
are doing a great job every year, the parcours is a very good one and
the fans are always creating a fantastic atmosphere. Last year, it was
the right decision to start my season here, and I hope things will go
the same also this time. I would like to fight for a stage victory, and
even though the finish to Sterling is missing, I am confident there will
be some chances for me, so I’ll just take it day by day and see what
happens”, said Petr, who last year came close of notching up a victory
on stage 2, which he finished in fifth place.
For teammate Gianluca Brambilla, a two-time Grand Tour stage winner in
2016, the Tour Down Under will mark a first in his career: “I’m entering
in my eighth pro year, and I’ve never before began the season so early.
It will be a new experience and I’m curious to find out how I’ll cope
with it. Now I feel good, but racing in a top event is totally different
than training. It won’t be easy to make the transition from the
European winter to the Australian summer, but we are traveling there
early and I hope to adapt to the conditions”.
Leading the Quick-Step Floors Cycling Team from the car will be sport
director Rik van Slycke: “The course is more or less similar to the one
of the past years. On the penultimate day the riders will go twice up
the Willunga Hill, and that stage should decide the overall. We must pay
attention also to the stages that will run close to the coast, because
the wind could have an impact on the outcome. Our team, a strong and
balanced one, will have a few cards to play, and Petr is one of these;
he came close of taking a stage win last year and will now try again his
hand. It’s not going to be easy, we know that, as the heat and the fact
the Australians are in good shape in this time of the year could play
against us, but nevertheless we are confident that we can do something
nice here.”
Joining Gianluca Brambilla and Petr Vakoc for the 19th Tour Down Under
will be 2015 Tour of Britain stage winner Jack Bauer, 2011 Giro d’Italia
stage victor Eros Capecchi, Tour of Belgium and Tour de Wallonie
champion Dries Devenyns, neo-pro Enric Mas and Martin Velits, one of the
few Slovak riders to win both the road race and the individual time
trial National Championships.
