He passed away during the night at the age of 87, Guido Neri, former professional cyclist born in Bagnolo in Piano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, on January 27, 1939. His career lasted nine seasons, from 1962 to 1970, during which he took part in eight editions of the Giro d'Italia, managing to complete them all.
A generous and consistent rider, Neri experienced the most important moment of his career in 1964, when he won the Trofeo Laigueglia, his only professional victory, wearing the Masonese jersey. That was also one of his best seasons, enhanced by several top finishes in Italian classics and a fourth-place stage finish at the Giro d'Italia. Two years later he achieved another fine satisfaction, winning the points classification at the 1966 Tour de France.
After his early experiences as a professional and years spent at Molteni, in 1967 he moved to Max Meyer, the team with which he raced until 1969. Despite not returning to victory, he continued to distinguish himself for his consistency, collecting several notable placings. Among these stand out the sixth place at the 1969 Giro del Piemonte and, above all, second place in the 14th stage of the 1969 Giro d'Italia, when only Franco Bitossi managed to beat him at the finish line.
In 1970 he competed in his final season wearing the Scic jersey, taking part once more in the Giro d'Italia before definitively hanging up his bicycle.
Our deepest condolences to his family and friends from the entire Tuttobiciweb editorial team.
