A great champion remains forever in everyone's heart and Vincenzo Nibali is certainly no exception. To the point that he continues to receive tributes and honors, as is only right. So today, with the racing season just concluded, the Sicilian champion has received honorary citizenship of Saltara Colli al Metauro.
He was welcomed by Mayor Pietro Briganti, several members of the municipal administration and many enthusiasts alongside whom we noticed, among others, Beppe Saronni, Stefano Allocchio, Davide Cassani, Luca Guercilena and various members of the press such as Alessandro Fabretti, Angelo Costa and Cristiano Gatti.
«I am happy and honored by this recognition, because it was right here in Saltara that I began to build my childhood dream: to win the Giro d'Italia. I remember a tough time trial, from Gabicce to Saltara, of over 54 km, which I finished in fourth place, but which allowed me to wear the leader's symbol. That was the "key" to open the door to success: today finding myself holding the key to the city of Saltara in my hands is a great source of pride and recognition that moves me».
That time trial was the eighth stage of the 2013 Giro, won by Alex Dowsett with a 10-second advantage over Bradley Wiggins while Estonian Tanel Kangert finished third at 14". Nibali, fourth, conquered the pink jersey and that day took the podium with a 29" advantage over Cadel Evans and 1'15" over Robert Gesink.
For the record, this is the fifth honorary citizenship that Vincenzo Nibali has received: in order Venetico in 2012; Solarino in December 2019; Auronzo di Cadore in May 2023; Vallepietra in July 2023 and today Saltara.
