Fernando Gaviria, Colombian sprinter for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, was the victim of a nasty crash in the sprint of the twelfth stage. Hit by another rider, Gaviria went down, suffering a hard impact that caused him intense pain in his left collarbone.
Gaviria, who had the support of Stefano Oldani at that crucial moment of the stage, was around tenth position when the crash occurred. Stefano Oldani himself recounts: «I spoke to him from the point where he crashed until we reached the team bus, and he was really shaken up. He took a bad hit and kept telling me his collarbone hurt. During the race I brought him up to about a kilometer from the finish, but there was a lot of confusion, many teams mixed up at the front of the group. I tried to keep him as far forward as possible. Just as I was dropping back, I saw him on the ground next to two Lotto riders and I realized he had taken a nasty crash».
X-ray examinations confirmed what everyone had suspected: left collarbone fracture and the need for surgical intervention to reduce the fracture.
LOTTO. Belgian Jerno Berckmoes also got up with the same verdict: left collarbone fracture. Tomorrow he will undergo surgery in Belgium. Liam Slock was also involved in the same incident. From the initial assessment, he suffered mainly abrasions to both elbows and his right hip. We hope he recovers well overnight, but he is expected to be able to continue in the Tour.
