Can a single victory change everything? Often, successes that risk becoming just another trophy in a champion's collection are given little weight, but for Zeb Kyffin it truly made all the difference, and it was precisely thanks to a victory that he continued his adventure as a professional athlete. We first met the British rider during the last edition of the Tour of Langkawi when he told us he had flown to Malaysia eager to perform well, but with the certainty of not having a contract for the following year with the then Unibet Rocket. Then in the penultimate stage, the penultimate race of the season and perhaps even of his life, he went all-in and achieved a victory that gave him something even more special: a contract for 2026.
His signing with Team Terengganu announced in mid-November seemed exceptional to us right away, especially because his victory had come by beating a rider from that very team. It was special to meet him again on the other side of the world, at the Tour of Magnificent Qinghai, smiling and wearing a new jersey, and so little by little we got him to tell us the behind-the-scenes details of that somewhat crazy but beautiful story. «When I left for the Tour of Langkawi, I knew I wouldn't have a contract for 2026, my life had changed a few years ago, I had become a full-time rider but I was facing the risk that it could all end. Once I arrived in Malaysia, I met Danny Feng from Team Terengganu, it was a team that had always fascinated me, and I introduced myself saying that I was neither a pure sprinter nor a pure climber but I could help others. He told me that I would have that week of racing to show him what I could do and so I tried to seize my opportunity» what happens next is extraordinary, the British rider attacks in the final kilometers, crosses the finish line with arms raised, and after the line, amid joy and emotion, he tells the world his story. That evening his phone is flooded with messages, many congratulations, but above all one from Danny Feng: the spot on the team is his.
The adventure with Terengganu Cycling Team is something absolutely different both in terms of races and mentality because racing for a Malaysian team means the calendar will be on the other side of the world and more. «My life changed completely because I found myself racing always far from home, making very long trips and visiting countries I had never seen before. Despite the Asian base there are many Europeans, the way the staff and sports directors work is very different from what I was used to: they don't impose racing rules, they make us feel comfortable, everyone has the opportunity to have their say creating an open dialogue. Last year the stress was too much, for me there was never space, I always had to follow orders and make myself available to others knowing they wouldn't renew my contract, it was too much» Kyffin explains to us, appreciating this open mentality with less stress and more desire to perform. His 2025 had indeed pushed him to the limit, so much pressure, but zero chance to demonstrate what he was truly capable of doing, and so with the certainty of being left without a contract he had started to think a bit more about his own race and less about that of others.
In the Malaysian team, Kyffin's role is that of race tactician, he puts his experience at the service of his teammates, but he doesn't have to give up his personal aspirations. «Here they gave me an important role right away, I try to put my experience at the service of my teammates and having raced so much in Europe I try to manage the race. My task is to lead out our sprinter and help our small climber get back up in the group as quickly as possible, but that doesn't mean I don't have my own opportunities, quite the opposite. I have many chances to do well without having to sacrifice myself, I've had two top ten finishes in the general classifications in India and Japan and several other placements and I hope to achieve something not only for myself but especially for the team that welcomed me with open arms.» he continues with a big smile, revealing to us that he has finally found a place where he feels good and has rediscovered the beauty of riding a bike.
Yesterday on the roads of the Tour of Magnificent Qinghai we saw him attacking and playing his cards. At the finish he was welcomed triumphantly by that very team that he had beaten just months before, but which has now become his new home. Perhaps the most beautiful stories are born this way by chance, from a dream on the verge of ending and from a sudden turn that creates a new path.
