Numbers, curiosities and statistics help us revisit and delve deeper into what we witnessed in yesterday's stage. Follow along:
36: MEXICO RETURNS
Mexico had been waiting for this victory for thirty-six years! By winning the second stage of the Tour de France in Barcelona, Isaac del Toro ends a long drought for the Latin American nation. The 22-year-old, 7 months and 8 days old – the youngest stage winner since Spain's Carlos Rodriguez in Morzine in 2023 (22 years, 5 months and 13 days) – succeeds his compatriot Raul Alcala, winner of a time trial in Épinal in 1990.
40: UAE'S SUCCESSES
Thanks to Isaac del Toro's victory, UAE Team Emirates – XRG has won its 40th stage at the Tour de France since the team's creation. The squad's first Tour victory dates back to 1999, when Ludo Dierckxsens, then riding for Lampre-Daikin-Colnago, raised his arms in Saint-Étienne during the eleventh stage.
1: UAE'S FIRST ONE-TWO
Dominating on the slopes of Montjuïc, UAE Team Emirates – XRG achieved the first one-two finish in its history at the Tour de France, with Isaac del Toro's victory ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. Such a performance hadn't occurred since the first stage of the 2024 Tour, when the DSM-Firmenich – PostNL duo of Romain Bardet and Franck van den Broek thwarted the peloton's plans.
41: PODIUM SUBSCRIBER
Second in Sunday's stage, Tadej Pogacar climbed onto a Tour de France stage podium for the 41st time in his career, surpassing Frenchman Charles Pélissier and Luxembourger François Faber. With 21 victories, 12 second-place finishes and 8 third-place finishes, the two-time world champion is now just one podium away from entering the top 10 of this ranking.
52: RESERVED POSITIONS
Clearly, these two don't let go. For the 52nd time, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar share the top two positions in the Tour's general classification. But never, until today, had they occupied these positions so early in the event. To find them in this position, we must go back to the sixth stage of the 2023 edition to see these same protagonists at the top of the standings. Since the 17th stage of the 2021 Tour, they have left these two precious positions to their rivals only 39 times.
5: AN UNPRECEDENTED POLKA DOT JERSEY
By taking the lead on the Côte de Begues (6.1 km at 6.5%), Alex Molenaar is the first Dutchman to wear the polka dot jersey since Wout Poels, 5 years ago, in 2021. The Dutchman, who has 5 points in the mountain classification, also provides a first distinctive jersey to his Caja Rural – Seguros RGA team, which had never managed to win one in its previous participations from 1987 to 1989.
41°07'N: A SOUTHERN ESCAPE
Until this Sunday, Tour de France riders had never experienced a departure so far south. Located at 41°07'N latitude, Tarragona has become the southernmost starting city in Tour de France history. The Catalan city thus dethrones Porto-Vecchio, in Corsica (41°35'N), which had hosted the Grand Départ of the hundredth edition in 2013, by just a few dozen kilometers. That year, the peloton even ventured as far as Bonifacio (41°23'N), at the extreme south of the "Island of Beauty."
