YELLOW PAGES, THE TOUR DE FRANCE PRESS REVIEW

TOUR DE FRANCE | 05/07/2026 | 08:41
di Aldo Peinetti

To put it in the full-page headline of Mundo Deportivo, the enthusiasm of the Catalan city for the Grand Départ is captured in a kind of neologism: "TOURCELONA". Reports of the opening stage that resort to challenging comparisons, as Gazzetta dello Sport does with Ciro Scognamiglio, who referring to Vingegaard attacks like this: "This time it was he who did something in the manner of Indurain, Hinault, Merckx". A giant among giants, in short, on the day when Filippo Ganna earns compliments and citations in various newspapers, Italian and beyond, moreover with that iconic tricolor jersey immediately honored as it should be. And in the end the time was recorded on Top Ganna's performance, it wasn't expected but you can't say the Piedmontese was caught unprepared.

On Repubblica, Cosimo Cito explains that "the climb of Montjuïc delivered a majestic spectacle on the first day of the Tour", recalling how the Olympic hill of Montjuïc witnessed the world championship triumphs of Gimondi and Criquielion. Marco Bonarrigo on Corriere weighs Vingegaard with his 58 kg against Ganna, 90 kg, even though the gap between the two is reduced to nothing in terms of seconds. In the sweltering Barcelona heat, the only hurricane (as Il Giornale defines the Dane) unleashed was the one called Vingegaard. Pier Augusto Stagi notes: "With this new generation of riders born ready, ambitious as never before, calculations are made immediately. If there's racing to be done and signals to be sent right away, they're sent".

The spectators thank you for the show. Beyond the Alps, awaiting the Tour's arrival in the Pyrenees, Alexandre Roos, one of many L'Équipe correspondents following the Grande Boucle, put it poetically. The sense of freedom of the race captured even in a red light run with total impunity, permitted when it comes to bikes: "That first taste of the Tour de France will always warm our hearts", even if in reality there was no need to turn up the thermostat", we read, while an accompanying photo says it all. GAZZETTA DELLO SPORT
GIANT VINGEGAARD
This time it was he who did something in the manner of Indurain, Hinault, Merckx. This time it was Jonas Vingegaard who resorted to comparisons with giants of cycling history and beyond, taking the Tour de France in the yellow jersey after concluding the Giro d'Italia in pink. "The start was perfect. This race is very long, but I couldn't have started better", is the summary from the Dane who on the Montjuïc hill, the balcony par excellence overlooking the wonders of Barcelona, won the first round against his eternal rival Tadej Pogačar:... (Ciro Scognamiglio)

REPUBBLICA
VINGEGAARD'S BLAST, GANNA 8 SECONDS TOO SLOW
Vingegaard in the yellow jersey, Pogačar "only" in the polka dot jersey and Ganna in between the two giants, regretting 8 seconds. The Montjuïc climb delivered a majestic spectacle on the first day of the Tour. The Barcelona team time trial was a direct challenge between the greats and reduced to a side dish the teammates, important yes but only until the final push of the Olympic hill, where world champions Felice Gimondi and Claude Criquielion won. (Cosimo Cito)

CORRIERE DELLA SERA
GANNA IS A GIANT, BUT VINGEGAARD BEATS HIM
If one has the courage and strength to rebel against the laws of physics that govern cycling, even a giant can fly as agile as a little bird conceived by nature to dominate the mountains. Were it not for that nothing (7"33 out of 22' of racing) that yesterday at Montjuïc separated the abundant 90 kilos of Filippo Ganna from the scant 58 of Jonas Vingegaard, we would celebrate the yellow jersey of the Piedmontese at the Tour de France after a thrilling time trial, free from an outdated regulation that imposed the stop to the time trial only at the passage of the fourth athlete of each team at the finish line and equal times for all. (Marco Bonarrigo)

IL GIORNALE
VINGEGAARD HURRICANE WITH MESSAGE TO POGAČAR: "PERFECT START"
The time is gone when you'd leave the jersey there and think about everything that had to be faced in three weeks. The time of calculations and reasoning is over. With this new generation of riders born ready, ambitious as never before, calculations are made immediately. If there's racing to be done and signals to be sent right away, they're sent. This time, in addition to the riders, the Tour itself gets involved, with its great chief Christian Prudhomme, who for the occasion stages a spectacular time trial that rewards both teams and the big names. The time is no longer taken on the fourth of each squad, but on the first (and everyone gets their own time). In short, the Tour sets the table to exalt talent and this comes out. (Pier Augusto Stagi)

L'ÉQUIPE
A LIBERATION
What a thrill to speed through the arteries of Barcelona. We passed red lights with total impunity; a breath of freedom pushed us from behind; leaves burned by the sun swirled in the wake of the team trains racing at breakneck speed; dust rose in great clouds; and there was the blue of the sea, small boats anchored placidly in the distance and the warm colors of Catalan flags – and flags from all over the world – that lined the route.
That first taste of the Tour de France will always warm our hearts, even if in reality there was no need to turn up the thermostat. (Alexander Roos)

EL MUNDO DEPORTIVO
VINGEGAARD CONQUERS BARCELONA
Jonas Vingegaard (29 years old) is not bluffing: during the team presentation at the Sagrada Família, before the start of the race, he had declared that he felt stronger and more confident than ever on the eve of this Tour de France. Yesterday he confirmed his words with an extraordinary display of power in the Barcelona team time trial, which kicked off the 113th edition of the "Grande Boucle". Already winner of two editions of the Tour (2022, 2023), the Dane made it clear without a shadow of a doubt – if there was any need – that he wants to contest the final victory with Tadej Pogačar from day one; and indeed, already yesterday, he wore the yellow leader's jersey.
