Paolo Bellino, CEO of RCS Sport, also spoke about what happened in the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia Women on the sidelines of the race.
«I believe that something happened today that has never occurred in our history and in our races. At 1:00 PM there was a small landslide that the area managers immediately cleared. But then the Park Authority officials informed us that there was a 150-meter ice front on the mountain that affected the final kilometer of the climb. The officials specified that the situation was very dangerous because the ice front was already divided into three sections and could have slid down the mountain»
Bellino continued by explaining «We had to make a decision for the safety of the athletes. We communicated the situation to the teams and sporting directors, and they informed the cyclists who knew what was happening. Clearly the summit was one kilometer further ahead and there would have been twenty kilometers left to the finish, but it was still a beautiful climb and a beautiful battle. I believe that what we did was the only thing we could do»
