Yesterday's time trial confirmed what many expected: when the course is fast and free from major altitude difficulties, Filippo Ganna remains the great favorite. The Italian champion dominated the race against the clock with a high-level performance, prevailing over pure specialists and leaving the general classification contenders to limit the damage.
Among them Jonas Vingegaard as well, who finished with the thirteenth best time. A positive result nonetheless for the Danish rider, especially considering the characteristics of the course. The time trial was not particularly suited to a rider like him: the course was almost entirely flat and lacked those climbs or demanding ramps where a lightweight climber like Vingegaard could have made the difference.
The Dane managed the race intelligently, without overexerting himself and maintaining a contained gap from the specialists. On more undulating courses, with gradients capable of showcasing the weight-to-power ratio, Vingegaard would probably have been able to perform better. On such a fast course, however, Ganna's superiority was difficult to counter. Despite everything, the Visma-Lease a Bike leader remains confident for the rest of the race and has expressed optimism and conviction that he still has great chances of conquering the pink jersey in the coming days, especially when the course begins to feature mountains and finishes more suited to his characteristics. The toughest stages are still to come, and that is where the Dane aims to build his assault on the general classification. At the end of the race, Vingegaard showed optimism when analyzing his performance: «Yes, it was definitely a difficult day, because this time trial was long and flat. It's not my specialty - said the Dane - I've never been particularly good at this type of race, and they suit more robust and powerful riders better. But I believe I'm in a good position».
In the end, the two-time Tour winner finished thirteenth with a deficit of 2'59" from time trial specialist Filippo Ganna.
«I'm getting closer to the leader's jersey. It would have been nice to wear the pink jersey already yesterday, because you have to enjoy wearing the leader's jersey every day. But I'm also happy wearing the blue one».
Words that confirm the serenity of the Dane, convinced that the Giro will change face in the coming stages, especially when the big climbs arrive where his qualities will be able to make the real difference.
