Jonathan Narvaez has roared back at the Giro d'Italia. The Ecuadorian from UAE Team Emirates-XRG claimed the fourth stage yesterday with a sharp, fierce, almost instinctive attack, confirming he is one of the most explosive riders in the peloton. But behind this victory lies much more than a simple win: it is the return of a man who had to rebuild himself after a serious injury, away from racing and close to his most important loved ones.
Last January, during the Tour Down Under, Narvaez crashed violently, suffering multiple fractures of his thoracic vertebrae. The South American found peace by returning home, to his Ecuador, surrounded by family and those green landscapes that remind him of who he truly is. A place that also carries his nickname: "Lagarto," the lizard. A nickname born within the walls of his home and now become a symbol of his ability to strike at the perfect moment.
«I really like Italy, I have a good feeling with this country - he said after crossing the finish line - My wife and I, when we're in Ecuador, often go to eat at Italian restaurants, so yes, it's a country I really like».
For Narvaez, Italy is not just about cycling. It's an emotional, cultural, almost familial bond. You can sense it in the way he speaks about our country, in the naturalness with which he shares habits with his wife, and in that passion for Italian cuisine that accompanies him even across the ocean.
The path to becoming competitive again, however, has been long and complicated, and the Giro d'Italia represents something of a rebirth for this rider, who hadn't raced since January. «It was difficult to return to racing at a high level after the accident - he explained - The team gave me the opportunity to stay in Ecuador with my family after the injury, and for me it's nice to train there. The difficult part for South American riders is coming to Europe, but my preparation went well also because I was at peace and had my loved ones by my side».
Words that tell the story of the struggles faced by South American athletes: months away from home, constant adjustments, distance from loved ones. Narvaez, instead, found in the tranquility of his land the strength to rise again and regain his best form.
And then there's the "Lagarto." A curious nickname, but perfect for describing the way he won. «My nickname, the lagarto, the lizard, my brother gave it to me for the first time because it's an animal that can eat very quickly when it's in the jungle, and that's what I did today: when I saw the finish line banner I attacked and managed to secure the victory».
A definition that seems to be the exact photograph of his stage: waiting, instinct, and a sudden acceleration that left everyone without an answer. Like a lizard in the forest, swift at the decisive moment. And the Giro d'Italia, once again, has applauded its Lagarto.
