Noemi Rüegg went from the joy of winning the first stage of the Vuelta España Femenina to the pain caused by a crash in less than twenty-four hours, an incident that occurred in the final kilometers of yesterday's stage. The 25-year-old EF Education-Oatly rider, who was wearing the red jersey as the general classification leader, crashed to the ground when fourteen kilometers remained to the finish line in San Cibrao das Viñas and shortly after was forced to abandon the Spanish race.
After being assisted, the Swiss rider underwent medical examinations and radiographic tests that revealed a fractured clavicle. In the evening, the American team announced that to treat the injury, Rüegg will need to undergo surgical intervention.
The fractured clavicle had also sidelined Marianne Vos from the Vuelta: the Visma-Lease a Bike Dutch rider, who crashed in the first stage of the race, was unable to start yesterday from Lobios
